Location Photo

I dont know about you guys, but sometimes when I am going to a(n important) place that I need to get to on time (ie, court, doctor's office, etc) i check out google maps to give me an idea of what the buiding/location would look like. it's probably a better help for those who FLY as opposed to driving.

Now, wouldnt it be a cool thing if- lets say I'm trying to find a .. i dont know.. a restaurant in the middle of a busy city?-- that when selecting a destination, we can click a 'view location photo' to see a driver's eye view of a place?

then we can even side scroll to see the other locations so that way when we are close, we actually get an idea of where we are... just one more step to helping drivers get to a destination faster/safer.

Good idea but if using a GPSr, wouldn't storage space be an issue? Unless you mean a few places, it could work. But for every single buildings, might be kinda hard to do. If I was using a laptop with wireless running MS Streets and Trips with a GPS, that would work. Just my 2 cents.

how bout...

when you connect to something like microsoft live maps or google maps.. it will have download options like..
drivers POV (point of view) photos..

*view destination (we get just the building)
*view street panorama (we get the street, 5 blocks before and after the location.. with something like a spinning triangle/flag on the very location.

Who's going to take the pictures?

The beauty of the satelite view is that large areas can be captured in one high-resolution picture. Getting a street-level shot would require something/someone to be at street level to take the picture. Any volunteers to help in this? If we get all of the GPS users to take pictures, maybe we could compile a worldwide database...

GPS Tour

You could always turn it into a GPS tour guide! If you already have a picture, you can upload it, enter the coordinates, then as you approach a preset distance from the target, the tour guide will pop up then click "go to" and you can click the picture you loaded so you know what you are looking for.

Google Maps has already done a lot of this work. If you haven't already done so, drill down to your nearest larger city and check out Street View.

Okay, I'm impressed, except they haven't done Memphis yet. Do they have teams that just drive around with a camera on top of the car? The complexity I alluded to earlier is still true, but who would have thought someone would actually do it.

Wow.

Answer my own question...

Looking closely at some of the picture you can see the shadow of the vehicle, and yes they do have a camera mounted on top.

Wow again. How do I get them to come to my neighborhood?

If you actually drag the pic

If you actually drag the pic around you can make out some of the car and the camera mounting equipment. It looks like a black VW of some sorts.
