Latest nuvi 2xx firmware?

What's the latest nuvi 200 firmware version? Garmin tech support says 3.7, but I'm running 3.6 and webupdater says there aren't any updates.

Strange

Strange, but Garmin doesn't even list the current version for the 200 executable at:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/blosp.jsp

The Perry website, http://gpsinformation.org/perry/nuvi/ , shows at least 4 prior versions that were offered as EXE's, so not sure what is going on. Call them if 3.7 is supposed to fix a problem you have.

Nuvi 660 -- and not upgrading it or maps until Garmin fixes long-standing bugs/problems, and get maps to where they are much more current, AND corrected on a more timely basis when advised of mistakes.

I have been complaining to Garmin

I have been complaining to Garmin for at least 6 months for removing the 2xx updates from their website.

They don't seem to understand that some people can't use their WebUpdater and rely on their website for firmware updates. We don't have admin rights at work, so we can't install WebUpdater. Garmin said we should borrow a friend's computer and go to a library for access!!!

The problem I have is they removed the map scale and are supposed to be restoring it, but I've been hearing that for months too.

Bummer

But they should certainly be aware of the large number of people who have lost their maps using WebUpdater because of a glitch in the transfer. Lots of people who CAN use it, WON'T use it. Besides, they look like a Mom-and-Pop organization when they provide some and arbitrarily decide not to provide others.

There's no way to undo a bad update

Besides,

There's no way to undo a bad update if you have to rely on WebUpdater.

In WebUpdater's defence...

I know WebUpdater has had some 'Bad Press', but I don't know what it did to deserve it...

WebUpdater works from a dynamic inventory of your device (\Garmin\GarminDevice.xml) and so may offer you updates you would have otherwise missed. Likewise, it should never attempt to install inappropriate updates.

Of course, all it is actually doing, is copying various installer programs to the device - it doesn't do any updating itself.
So, if it copies something on there you don't like the look of, there is a 'Window of Opportunity' to delete it, before you unplug the unit and let it reboot. (Look for *.gcd and *.bin files)

It's not until the reboot, that any of the firmware updates take place (New Voices and Vehicles are handled differently - but generally, these are not the 'End of the World', if they go wrong).

Not Sure about latest version

I am running Version 3.60 on the Nuvi 200

I'm not sure if it is the latest version but I
connected to Web Updater last night & it didn't find
a update.

I have talked to Garmin too about removing the 200 from the list and they told me to look here for updates.

No Firware Updates There

That's where the firmware updates used to be posted. It doesn't look like Garmin posts firmware updates there anymore. Just updates to POILoader. It says to use WebUpdater for firmware updates. We'll have to wait and see if any get posted.

WebUpdater is useful for some things, but ...

My problem with it is having to get my nuvi from the car, connect it to the computer, run WebUpdater, before I know if an update is even available for my unit. I should be able to just go to the downloads page like everyone else to see if an update has been issued.

WebUpdater is also useless for reverting to previous versions if firmware is buggy, or has removed important features like the map scale. Manual updates are the only way to do that, and Garmin is deliberately preventing nuvi 2xx owners from doing that.

Ok, I can see why it is annoying to be treated differently!

If you've got an old compact flash card, or memory stick you can leave in the machine, you can save yourself the hassle of bringing the Nüvi in. Copy the \Garmin\GarminDevice.xml to the \Garmin directory on the card/memory stick and let WebUpdater interrogate that instead.

(You'd just have to remember to refresh the file, after an update of the Nüvi itself)

Well if it makes you feel any better, Garmin only make the current version of firmware available for direct download for other units.

Current Firmware

I think his concern is that if Garmin never offers the current exe for download, it precludes the Perry site from archiving it for downgrading later.

GarminDevice.xml

Thanks Phil. The trick about putting GarminDevice.xml on my flash drive is a good idea. I'll do that tonight.

I do have all of the manual updates that Garmin offered archived on my computer so I can go back to them if I need to. Unfortunately, none since 3.4 are available. I don't even think a version history of the newer versions is available.

Worked like a charm!

Phil,

Putting GarminDevice.xml on a local drive worked like a charm. Webupdater even brought me to a page with all of the version update history!

If I continue with the update process, will it put the update file on my flashdrive? If so, I could save that in my archive as a way to have this available in the future as a previous version.

Ok, I missed that point entirely smile

The strange thing is, that Webupdater obtains all the updates via http, from the Garmin site - what's missing, is the page that describes the update and where to find it...

gdfaini wrote:

Yes, it should do.

Watching WebUpdater in action, I came across an interesting little snippet. This appears before the <html> tag, so you don't normally see it. It was on the description page that Webupdater links to. I've deliberately mutilated the hyperlinks, to stop them being active, since they're not actually for the Nüvi 2xx series. I'm sure the same technique will apply though.

"NOTE FOR USERS WANTING TO DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE ON ONE COMPUTER AND THEN INSTALL IT TO THEIR DEVICE USING A DIFFERENT COMPUTER:

  1. To download the region file used by WebUpdater, copy and paste this link into your browser on computer #1:
    http:/www.garmin.com/software/nuvi310_360_370_WebUpdater__440.gcd

  2. Bring nuvi310_360_370_WebUpdater__440.gcd to computer #2 where your device is attached.
  3. Then you can drag-and-drop nuvi310_360_370_WebUpdater__440.gcd onto the WebUpdater icon on your desktop.
  4. Or you can invoke WebUpdater at the command line, passing in the region file as a parameter:

    C:\>WebUpdater c:\path\to\nuvi310_360_370_WebUpdater__440.gcd"

It's strange that this functionality is so difficult to access. I had been manually retrieving updates and renaming them to the proper file name (GUPDATE.GCD in this example). The advantage of letting WebUpdater do it, is that is cross-checks the version number contained in the file name, with the actual internal version number.

What's also interesting to note, is that Garmin are leaving the previous firmware version on their website, but providing no means of accessing it. If I alter the version number in the example above (which retrieves V4.40), I can access the previous version (V4.30).
