Listen to this, LOL, Map Error!!

Well I took a vacation to Atlantic City and stayed at a hotel on the boardwalk. Of cause like all hotels on the boardwalk you drive your car up to the hotel check in and park your car in the parking garage. Anyway, the direction from my c530 were perfect right up until the point were it wanted me to make a right turn on the boardwalk. Of cause the boardwalk is not a road, lol. The 2008 maps that are in it and also on mapquest they have the boardwalk in Atlantic City as a road. It was no big deal since I was right in front of the hotel anyway. Also on a day trip away from the hotel on the way back it had me take another route back to the hotel and had me go down another street and make a left on the boardwalk to get back. This was alittle annoying as now I had to make a U-turn and go back a different route. Just thought I would mention this as I couldn't believe that after all these decades the maps have the Atlantic City Boardwalk as a road.

Sidewalks, boardwalks, people's front yards are all considered roadways for the worst drivers in Amercia smile Didn't you ever hear the expression 52 in the fast lane?!?!?! It was born in NJ! wink

I don't know how true that statement is but while working in Puerto Rico for a three months work assignment I had the chance to experience the worst drivers.

Once I was stopped at a red light in the Condado district, my cars was about the fifth car to the light and I saw some dude behind me drive up on the sidewalk (avoiding pedestrians) and drive up to the light and make a right hand turn.

Submitted Change To Navteq...

Yes I filled out a report to Navteq and received a tracking # so I can see if the change I submitted has been made in the future.

Not In Pedestrian mode....

As far as I know there is no pedestrian mode on the c530 and if there was one, that would be a hell of a walk from were I was in Pennsylvania to Atlantic City, NJ. smile

Walk Streets

The Manhattan Beach area of Los Angeles has several streets designated as "walk streets", no cars allowed. My NT v2008 Nuvi 760 has routed me onto these walk streets before, but only when the destination address is actually on the walk street itself. I think it is the only way the unit can resolve the route in these special cases.

I guess Navteq could move the location of the address from the walk-street to the home's garage on the alley, but then it would not be accurately depecting the homes true address. Or Garmin could add a "Park the car, and walk from here" message to the TTS. But that would be silly, too.

(The unit is not in pedestrian mode...)

In My Case ...

In my case the GPS wanted me to make a left onto the boardwalk and yes the final destination address was an address on the boardwalk but I still think that since the boardwalk is not a road the GPS should have the final destination set as somewhere near the address instead of telling you to turn onto a road that is non existent for vehicles.

--
ScottK

I see your point. I think,

I see your point. I think, though, that it is a slippery-slope for Navteq/Garmin to begin routing units to "somewhere near" an address instead of to a actual, legitimate address.

Perhaps such walk-only streets could be designated as one-way in both directions (preventing a turn onto the street) and the TTS could recognise this as "...Approacing [address] on walk-only street on [left/right]...". In the aggregate, though, I think that would create more confusion than it solves. What if you don't use TTS? And, do you really want to fumble with Pedestrian Mode to get to your destination?

I have noticed that many POI's in the Garmin data base have multiple listings. LAX airport has many...one each for departures, arrivals, short-term parking, etc. I wonder if you looked-up your boardwalk destination in the POI list if it has similar characteristics (i.e. one for the front door and another for the parking garage.)

This I would think, for Garmin, be the easiest fix.

Very Cool

Miss POI

I've seen Police vehicles

I've seen Police vehicles driving on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City and Wildwood, NJ. I guess it depends on whether you are authorized to drive on the boardwalk or not.

u laugh about Boardwak being

u laugh about Boardwak being a road. Has anybody seen the bumper sticker "If you don't like my driving, stay off the sidewalk".
If you have laughed at that one you have not walked on the sidewalk in Paris, France.

It is common practice there.

strange

I am surprised no one had made the turn onto the boardwalk yet. Just following my GPS, LOL

7 Years Old

Considering this thread is 7 years old, I am almost positive the issue with the boardwalk has been fixed a long time ago and this whole discussion is moot.

Reporting to Navteq

I have to report a map issue to Navteq. Are they responsive to customer input. How long does it take to change. Thanks.

Ok, I guess

As responsive as a 2-3 year lead time can be. Go here: https://my.garmin.com/mapErrors/report.faces
Or you can go http://here.com and report it.

That's because the original traditional maps probably showed Boardwalk as a road like anywhere else. The businesses on the boardwalk have their address as 1234 Boardwalk. This is very common in New Jersey beach towns.

When the map eventually made it to the Nuvi, it just treated it as routeable like any road.

thanks.
