BMP Icon Files

I have tried to make some bmp icon files but cannot get them to work.
I followed the instructions on this site to make them and transfer them.
But I haven't had any luck. I downloaded the bmp then put it in my file and tried to load to my Garmin nuvi 660. It tells me there is no .csv or .gpx file.
HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

.

Easy there grasshopper. : ) You will get it.

The BMP files must be in the same folder with your Custom POI file. And take note in the instructions where it tells you to be sure to name the BMP files the same as the Custom POI files.

Here's the basic procedure for loading.

Create a folder on your computer for your Custom POI files.

Download and/or create whatever Custom POI files you want to load onto your GPS unit and place ALL of them in that folder and keep them there.

Put the BMP files in the same folder with your CSV or GPX files.

For example ...

> My POI (folder)
... IHOP.csv (Custom POI file)
... IHOP.bmp (Custom Icon file)

Attach your GPS unit to your computer with a USB cable. (Alternately, if you have a unit that will read the Custom POIs from the SD card, attach or insert the SD card to the computer.)

Run the POI Loader program that you installed to your computer and follow the prompts.

Select your GPS unit (or SD card if applicable) as the destination for the Custom POIs in the POI Loader screen. Use the drop down arrow if necessary.

When it asks for the location of the data, Select 'Browse ...' and navigate to the folder that you created.

Select Manual or Express Mode using the drop down list. (Express Mode will set alerts based upon the data in the files. Manual Mode will allow you to set the alert information manually, if desired.)

If you select Manual instead of Express, you can set Proximity and Speed alerts for your POIs.

Follow the prompts.

Express Mode will load you files and present you with a Finish screen indicating how many POIs were loaded.

Manual Mode will present you with each POI file you have in your folder giving you the opportunity to skip loading that file, and to set or change the speed or proximity alert information. At the end Manual Mode will also present you with a Finish screen indicating how many POIs were loaded.

POI Loader will create a file in the destination you chose named POI.GPI with all your Custom POIs.

Not sure what you mean by

Not sure what you mean by "the bmp put in my file" but just do what MM said. Make sure that you windows explorer can see extensions.

In windows explorer, tools>folder options>select "view" tab> and deselect "Hide extensions for known types" (or something like that). Then click "Apply to all folders"

By any chance did you load these files separately or at the same time? If separately, you overwrite the POI file (POI.gpi) every time you run POI Loader and all files must be loaded at once. If that is what you did, I give.

At the same time.

Icon the only issue?

Is it only the custom Icon that fails to show? Do the the locations show up under Extras/Custom POIs? If so, what do you see when you choose the location and then Show Map?

First of all, I would recommend against having numerals in your POI file names. This will likely produce alert results that you don't intend.

Secondly, how is your folder structure set up? Are these files in separate folders or in the same one?

Be aware that for any POI list, the menu on the GPS unit will only show the 50 locations closest to your current position.

Lastly, DOUBLE and TRIPLE check that you don't have double file extensions (for example redlight2.bmp.bmp. which won't work). Be sure that your file browser is set to show your file extensions.

bmp

Took out the nember on poi's replaced with letters.
All ext. are single bmp. Still not Showing on gps.

I wanted to start all over so I tried loading just one new poi to erase the rest but it did not work.

I also have another software problem need to talk to garmin to check out unit.

I'll talk back after I check with garmin support.

Thanks For The Help.

The problem with the unit not putting the icons on was caused by not running the poi installer and selecting the remove previously installed poi's.
The unit would not automaticly delete the old one's when a new one was sent.

POI Loader

The important thing is that things are working, but I think you'll find that this advice is contrary to every experience posted on this site -- running POI Loader definitely overwrites the previous POI.gpi file and the icons and alerts are are located within that file.
