Nuvi in light aircraft

Anyone know how my Nuvi 660 would react in a light plane? I think the speed would work out OK, but how would it deal with not sticking to roads?

Off Road Mode

Instead of picking Fastest or Shortest in the settings, choose Off Road and it won't try to snap to the streets.

on the air

I own an ultralight and if the unit is set to Usage Mode = Automobile is constantly recalculating unless you fly low and follow the contour of the street below, if you go of course then recalculating is non stop and you also have to adhere to street flow.

Most of the time is set just with the map display so it shows the street I'm flying over, since the Max speed of my flying contraption is only 26 mph (no wind) I can also set it to Usage Mode = Pedestrian and Route Preference = Off Road and this way the unit doesn’t care if you are going the wrong way on a one way street or going as the crow flies.

Am I correct in remembering that the 2xx do not offer an "Off Road" option?

I'm envious of your ultralight; where are you allowed to fly in the Tampa area? Must you maintain a minimum altitude over cities/everywhere? I went to take a test flight in a two-seat trainer before I bought (I'd already been pulled by a car in a non-powered unit for a short distance). When I go to the field, I was informed the instructor had died when the gas tank located above the engine leaked fuel onto him and the engine and he went up in flames and then down in flames. Kinda turned me off.

As noted, put it in 'off road' moade, and it will function, but should not ever be used as a replacement for proper avionics gear. Garmin sells that too, and from what I gather, it's really quality stuff.

The minimum over populated areas is 500 feet, the problem in the area we fly are the FAA rules, west of I-75 is 1200 feet max because of McDill AFB and Tampa International, east of I-75 the sky is the limit; we had a farm to fly from in Thonotosassa, FL and we were banned from flying there by the FAA because someone also using the same field kept buzzing a trailer park and they filed a complain against the owner of the farm.

It is not very wise to fly low over populated areas in case the engine dies and have to make and emergency landing, altitude is your friend and need to keep eyes open for an empty field just in case.

I have only taken up the Nuvi260 a couple times, I'm afraid to drop it since it doesn't have a lanyard to keep tied to the plane in case it pops out of the holder.

As you can see the fuel tank is below the seat and in no danger of busting open over my head,

By the way, the thing is going on sale soon, and very easy to learn…

I created a page with pictures to share with you guys my hobby of flying, check it out.

Fantastic pictures from the ultralight. Now I don't have to try it myself. smile

As for off road setting on the 260, I'm assuming/hoping that you added the second paragraph after I began typing. Surely I'm not so senile as to have missed you saying you use the off-road setting.

Must learn...

Must... learn... to... fly...

Nuvi 350 on airline

I was curious...so I used my nuvi 350 on airline jet. It seemed to work fine except it does not have the map(s) used in aviation units. Also I had to sit a window seat for it to get signal.

a mind is a terrible thing to waste

I'll have to look for the "Off road" mode. I don't recall seeing it. I guess the same would go for a boat.

The 660 should have the same settings as my 260.
In a boat or a plane or just walking or biking where there are no streets to follow that setting Route Preference = Off Road should be the one to use.

It is also the mode to use when you want to find you car at a Redskins game.

Unless you leave the GPS in the car...
