Batteries and Garmin GPS Garmin has no clue

As some of you know I am Bus and Limo Driver over the road in the South West USA. I am sorry to say that on some of our buses the cig lighter dose not work. I need a back up for when I get a bus like this. If you are an OTR your rig may not have a working cig lighter. Or your car or pick up may not have a working one in it. I have read post on this matter on this site one member even ask about a Solar Cell unit for his Garman. I called Garmin about my new Garmin c550 and found out that it has been shipped and I will have it by Monday or Tuesday allll rightttt. Any way I asked about this I was transferred to a tech who dells in these matter. 1st while talking to him on this matter I found out that he is a member of POI Factory then he told me some shocking news. Garman has never thought of this. As a result they have never tested a Garmin GPS with any type of Battery extender. As a result of our conversation he is going to talk to other techs about this and make this recommendation to management then e-mail me back. I suppose we will see.

I am not a geek

I am not a geek I am a bus driver. Hooo my head hearts after reading all that. Sorry I am a kiss man. keep it simple stupid. I I want is a cable that I can was with something a APC UPB10 Mobile Power Pack for charging mobile devices or a Lenmar 2100 Battery back up so that I may keep my c550 alive for 8 10 14 hrs for times when I do not have a plug for my c550. Witch goes back to the post that started this. I DO NOT WANT TO KILL MY UNIT OUT THERE.

Gel-cell battery

For you application you could consider a 12v gelcel battery used for emergency jump starts. I have 22 amp-hour one bought at Walmart that has 2 - 12v lighter outlets. Some are more fancy with air compressors, radios and lights.
Just plug the regular Garmin charging cable into one of the 12v outlets.
Much of the prior discussion has been on something more portable to extend battery life while walking. This battery is heavy and not a solution for this but in a bus/limo might work fine.

Battery Back up

The powermonkey will keep my nuvi 350 unit running for a long time. If you use the battery as it is sold and plug it into the suction cup adapter it will run for over 12 hours before the Garmins battery kicks in (longer pending your Garmins settings). It holds 2200mAh. The device is small, about the size of a "D" size battery so you do not have to lug a huge car battery around with you.

The nuvi 350 requires me to use the suction cup adapter so it does not go to mass storage. I have a side USB that will send it straight to mass storage unless you special order a XDA tip which is $8.

This should take care of you for the day.
There are other ones on the market but this one I tested personally and is re-chargable by outlet, computer or solar. It met my needs but is $120. The one without the solar panel is $60.

If you buy it from tigerdirect.com, by March 31st there is a $30 rebate.

I like it especially since I can charge my ipod, cell phone and nuvi. It will power my camera too but not charge it. So it's pretty versatile. You might be able to write it off on your taxes next year too if you put it down that you got it for work!
