First POI download on my 260

I have downloaded the Rest Areas files (from this site) using Garmin's POI Loader. After loading them to the 260, not on a SD card ,I found them under the "Extras" button on my 260. When I push the button, "Custom POIs" comes up. When pushing it again, the Rest Areas are listed, ex."Turnout NB 1-75 MM 23.3 W" My Question is what happens now? While driving on I-75 will they just show up on the screen? I don't think that it will tell me that it is coming up, because I don't have an mp3 player on the 260. Also, it shows only 48 Rest Areas from 12 miles to 242 miles away on the extra list. Will the rest of them show up when I am traveling beyond 242 miles?
Thanks, Paul

They only show up on the

They only show up on the list if they are the 50 closest to your current location.

If you loaded them with alerts, then you will be alerted with a tone. Otherwise, they are just like any other poi.

Rest Area POI

I downloaded the file with a csv at the end. Is that what will give me a tone alert? If it is correct, will it alert me before I get to one?

Paul..... Nuvi 765T

.

If you loaded it into your GPS with the Garmin POI Loader and manually set the alert, it will give you a tone alert. The alert will sound at whatever distance or speed you set and you will also get a red flag alert on the screen. This should continue until you reach the POI, the red continuously and the tone intermittently.

You also need to go into the tools (wrench) part of the GPS, I forget the exact menu, and enable the alerts there.

No Sound in CSV

Default sound alerts are built into the GPS, but they only trigger if you set the alert by running POI Loader in manual mode and choosing a distance.

No, the csv file is just a list of locations -- no sounds associated with it.

As for wondering what might happen as you approach, are you familiar with running a simulated route? That would show you exactly what you can expect.

Alerts

to set alerts from the main screen go wrench then proximity points Alets will show select change audio n then select how you want to be notificed then ok and back out. this if for the 660 but should work on most all units.

Just To Clarify

The above method merely allows alerts to announce for any POI's for which alerts have already been set. An alert must still be set .

To the OP, regular POI files do not alert by default. As several others have mentioned, you must SET an alert. You can do so in a variety of ways.

If you run POI Loader in Manual Mode instead of Express Mode, you can set whatever alerts you wish. Or you can put some alert information in the files themselves.

Check out Phil's great guide for more information about alerts.

Hornbyp's guide to setting alerts with POI Loader
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/6764

Also, be aware that alerts will only sound if you are on the road on which the POI is located, traveling in the direction of the POI, and if the POI is located sufficiently close to the road (typically 50 feet).

POI downloads

Thanks to all. It all works. The manual mode works like a charm. Also learned alot from Hornbys.

I too...

I have a 260 too, and the Rest Area files worked like a charm on my drive from Colorado to Florida last January. I set the alert to 5000 feet, and never missed a needed break. grin

Nuvi 260

Do you store your POIs on a sd card or on the 260?

--
Paul..... Nuvi 765T

GPS

I always put them on the unit. I've got enough space there for a few million, and I will never actually load that many on it, so why mess around with a card? I just posted in another thread, I have 7 vehicles, 13 voices, around 150,000 custom POI's, and I still have 170 mb of available space on the unit. I'll never fill that up, so why mess with the card.

I'll use the card if I ever need an additional map, or if I ever want to take some photos on a trip to show someone. Otherwise, the card is pretty much unnecessary.

So the 500 waypoints that the unit has( by spec) are not POIs?

--
Paul..... Nuvi 765T

Those...

Those 500 are in "Favorites". You can save waypoints to Favorites, or you set them up in a POI file. If you do it as POI, you are almost unlimited in how many you can store. I find it far easier to manage my waypoint files as POI's. I create them on MapSource, save the file as a .gpx, then load it with the POI Loader. I only keep the files on the unit that I need for a given trip or purpose. The rest are stored on my PC and loaded as needed.

Hey raprieb,
Did you find a secret Garmin 260 owners manual??
Just kidding. I feel that I have learned so much from so many people in such a short time. I feel that everybody remembers what it was like to be a nubie. The directions that everybody gives are very easy to understand. I think that asking a question, so everybody understands what you are asking for, is hard. Like all products each has their own terms. I am sure in time I will get better.

I got the idea

You are right in inferring that the 260 manual is useless. This site has been my main resource in learning how to use my Nuvi. Most of what I've learned comes from others here, or at least the idea was sparked by a discussion.

I got the idea of saving waypoints as POI's from someone else here. Now when I'm planning a trip, I route it in MapSource, create any necessary waypoints, name and number them in order of travel (Way 1 I80, Way 2 hwy 287, etc.), to force the unit to follow the route I want, then save it as a .gpx file, named for something to do with the trip. I put it in my POI folder on my PC, then upload the whole thing, and lo and behold, there is my trip, waypoint by waypoint ready to navigate. grin

Waypoints

So, when I drive back to MA.(live in FL. Nov.-May),we love to do side trips. I was planning to go from Hollywood,FL. to Savanna GA., stop for the night. The next leg would be from Savanna to Myrtle Beach SC. I thought that I would have to pre-program each city in my Favorites and just start out each morning with a new beginning and go to my next destination. Would waypoints make it easy than doing it my way.

--
Paul..... Nuvi 765T

Depends

It depends on how you want to set up the route. I have MapSource on my PC, so I'll just set a route on that, then create waypoints where I want to be sure that the GPS will follow my route and not its own ideas. Most of the time you can just enter an address or a POI and let the Nuvi do its own thing, but if there is a specific side trip that you want to take along the way, or a particular road that you want to drive, then you need to make the waypoints so that the GPS will tell you to turn when YOU want to, not it wants to.

If all I care about is getting to my destination, then I'll just set that and follow the route without using waypoints. It just depends on your needs. There is certainly no reason to add any complications if it isn't necessary.

260 Download Help

I am getting there, but I have run in to my first problem. I have loaded the Dunken Donuts POI on my 260. Every thing works like it should. It flashes RED when near, and alerts me with a sound. When I look at the locations under the extra button, all listings are listed twice. what I have noticed is that when I look at the first one and then the second one, the only difference is the way the street number is placed. It is the same number.
Is this what it should be doing?

--
Paul..... Nuvi 765T

.

It sounds like you either loaded two versions of the same file or loaded it to both your SD card and to your nuvi itself.

Double Dunkin Donuts POIs

MM, I took your advice and removed all my POIs. I reloaded just the DD POIs from your answer on 3/16/08,com/node 9162. After loading, it told me that I have put 7,503 POIs on my nuvi. I do not use a SD card. When I checked under custom POI they still show double.

Are you by any chance on a Mac? If so, the old file is probably in the trash on the GPS.

Or, the file might have duplicates.

Double DD

No, I am using Windows XP I did some reserch and I went into the DD POIs Download File. By using my GPS and looking up LAT. & LON. on the POI file, I did find double listings. I used a DD down the street from my house, on the ride to it it shows only one DD. So, I belive that I did do everything right.

Paul..... Nuvi 765T

Wow!

pcatch135 wrote:

Just glancing at the entries in this file, it appears to need a lot of work. Many locations have no address. Other locations have the address in both column C and D (sometimes split between the two). The first 13 listings have the exact same longitude out to five decimal places and I find that statistically impossible. There are 787 locations with the description "World Famous Coffee and More"; none have addresses, and many appear to be duplicates. Appears somebody at some point merged several files and each file was formatted differently. Glad I'm not a coffee drinker.

Updated Dunkin Donuts File

Hi, I have edited the Dunkin Donuts POI file. I found 800 duplicates. I am going to send it to Miss POI and she should update the File.

and mabe after I get better I would be able to join in. Again, from all the coffee lovers Thanks.
