2009 Maps Come Out in Late April

I registered my nuvi 260 yesterday and learned that new maps are coming out in late April. Here's the link with the mention that "We are making our map data even better! The North America 2009 map update is scheduled for release in late April. Check back to order a map update for your product."

It won't help me, but if anyone else is thinking about getting a new GPS for the summer, it might be worth waiting to get the new maps.
For my part, I asked Garmin in an email if I might get a discount, seeing as I just bought the nuvi 260. I had previously (last week) asked customer service when new maps would come out and the rep guessed around August. I have no doubt that he was being honest; I think my timing was just a bit off.
If I don't get a discount, I'll wait another year for the 2010 set of maps. It's not worth it to me to spend another $75 almost immediately after buying the unit.
April Updates
I got an email from Garmin yesterday saying that those who registered their devices after Mar 15th of this year should be receiving the map udpates for Free.

Unlock required for update?
Does the update require a new unlock code or does it simply install and work as long as you have legally unlocked your 2008 version? I always seem to get hung up during the unlock process.....

When purchasing maps, you get a new unlock code for that particular product.

It will come with a code that you will enter when you run the installation. It will connect to the my.garmin.com site to verify your previous installations and to add this information to your registration.
Garmin support
I have a nuvi 650, which I got in February 2008. I called Garmin about the 2009 map and was told that if I paid $69 that I could get the new map. I can't believe that they do not offer better support for their product. They should allow a free update for at least the first year. I felt like I have been ripped off. Next time I will go with Tom Tom.

I guess this is why they release a map they call 2009 in April of 2008. They can say to those people who get a unit in early 2008 that they got the 2008 map. People who don't read forums like this probably don't know about the 2009 map availability in April 08.
Giving free updates for one year would add to the unit cost. I'd rather have the lower purchase price. Having a map that's one year behind doesn't seem like a big deal to me, and I wouldn't choose a GPS on that basis. I only plan to update every three years.

I would have stuck with the 2008 maps and been fine with them. The ONLY reason I upgraded to the 2009 maps is the fact that I got them free. There's no need to upgrade every year.
