2009 Maps Come Out in Late April

I registered my nuvi 260 yesterday and learned that new maps are coming out in late April. Here's the link with the mention that "We are making our map data even better! The North America 2009 map update is scheduled for release in late April. Check back to order a map update for your product."

http://www8.garmin.com/unlock/update.jsp

It won't help me, but if anyone else is thinking about getting a new GPS for the summer, it might be worth waiting to get the new maps.

For my part, I asked Garmin in an email if I might get a discount, seeing as I just bought the nuvi 260. I had previously (last week) asked customer service when new maps would come out and the rep guessed around August. I have no doubt that he was being honest; I think my timing was just a bit off.

If I don't get a discount, I'll wait another year for the 2010 set of maps. It's not worth it to me to spend another $75 almost immediately after buying the unit.

Search this site and you will see that many got a free update when they purchased their gps close to the update time. Many call or e-mail Garmin and they have been for the most part, very helpful with this.

I wonder why the early release?

If I am not mistaken, the new (2008) maps came out last year in September or October. I contacted Garmin and they sent me new maps in November, so that means I will have had my "new" maps for about 5 months. Oh well, as long as there is legitmate additions/valued-added I don't have a problem. I, like WaddlingJ, will probably wait until 2010 to purchase new maps unless I notice glaring omissions. Can't complain as more information and/or better maps is always a good thing.

The v2008 City Navigator North America maps were released in May 2007.

MM is right

The 2008 NT was released in May 2007. It was not offered for sale for upgrading until sometime late July-early August 2007.

The free update was offered last year if your GPSr was under 90-days old.

I got the free update for my 200, which I bought in March.

Garmin's Reply

Here's the relevant text. I guess we'll find out more in late April/early May.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I'll be happy to help you with this! You are exactly correct, this was a surprise to us here at Garmin as well that the software was going to be updated this soon. We deeply apologize for any miscommunication that occured during your previous conversations with us. We are unsure of the cost or procedure that will be associated with this update. Please feel free to check the site in late April to get more details.

I have had my GPSr for less than a year, and have the 2008 maps already. I don't plan to update every year.

Next year, when the 2010 update is available, I'll consider either an update, or applying the update cost to getting a newer model GPSr.

Since I mainly use my GPS to go from A to B, I don't care too much about added features, but I kind of would like a lager screen. grin

Variable Update Policy

We didn't know the v2008 maps were going to be called v2008 instead of v9 until May 31 ... and then it was just an unverified rumor.

(See: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/3716

It seems Garmin's policy on 'free updates' is variable. Some were told a specific required GPS purchase date to be eligible for the free updates; and some of us got free updates even when the unit was purchased in January.

Latest maps

I am confused. I got my Nuvi 650 in January with a City Navigator North America NT 2008 map. I thought that that was the latest version. Now I find out there is a NT v2008. Is this a later version, should I upgrade?

.

The two things that you reference in your post are the same thing. They are the same version.

I can't wait for this update! :)

We are making our map data even better! The North America 2009 map update is scheduled for release in late April. Check back to order a map update for your product
Some enhancements include: Better routing, widening of your existing screen on your current Garmin GPS and the highly anticipated DUI mode. With this map update, and your GPS plugged into your vehicle via cigarette lighter, you can activate the DUI/auto pilot mode and your GPS will drive your vehicle for you while you catch much needed sleep to sober up. These are a few of the enhancements you can look forward to in May 2008.

Wow! smile :)

Can't wait to get my hand on this latest map version...

smile

Thanks Drew!

That AutoPilot/DUI feature alone sounds like it's well worth the money!

2009 Update

This sounds a little far fetched to me. A DUI mode. that would help about half the people that drive at night and weekends.

I don't see the need to update yet. My next update will probably be a new Garmin GPS device in 2010 or so.

New 2009 maps

I just got off the phone with Garmin support.I asked about the new map update that will be out in late April. I was told by Garmin that once a Map update is made public and it has,any units that are bought between now and when it comes out will get a free update. I guess they will use the date when you register your GPS. The new Nuvi 205 & 255 will be the first ones with the new map update on them from the factory. They should be available before Mother's Day.

ok ok ok... wow!! it's

ok ok ok... wow!! it's unbelievable the things people post on the internet. everything posted above is either totally incorrect or has very little, and i mean LITTLE truth behind it. no one knows when the release of the new software is- not even the people you talk to at Garmin. usually they are released late spring/ early summer. it could be june before you see it, so don't freak when you don't see it in april. also, free mapping. you buy the gps, register it, then depending on the purchase date you CAN receive an update if you request it within 30 days of the purchase date. that's it. after the 30 days you'd be outta luck.

and whoever posted the DUI

and whoever posted the DUI mode thing... i don't even know what to say

Exactly

truth in labeling

Dear J,

It is intrinsically dishonest to release a product in the first half of 2008 and label it "2009"; there must be very large holes in the Federal Truth-in-Labeling Laws.

Lighten up

It seems like every time anyone smells an update, the rumor mill gets started in high gear, so I decided to post something very outlandish that couldn't possibly happen in a map upgrade. I did so to insert some humor in the rush to find out more about the updates and parody the inevitable rumors.

I apologize if anyone took DUI mode and expanding the size of your GPS screen seriously.

What's life without a little innocent humor? smile

.

I knew you were kidding. : )

DANG!!.........You mean I

DANG!!.........You mean I can't use the DUI feature any longer? Man, and I was SO getting used to catching a few z's while on my way to work in the morning!! So, do I have to send my unit back to Garmin for them to remove this feature?

So you only get 1 map update

So you only get 1 map update with the purchase of a new unit? If true this stinks, and guess I already blew mine with the updater feature when I registered it a week ago. I would think you should get updates to both unit internal operating software and map software for at least the warranty period. This would seem fair to me.

I bought mapsource years ago and still get new updates as a registered owner of the software. Wonder if I can use that ????

90 + Days

I actually got updated maps after a recent (2 weeks) registration on a Nuvi 350 that I had purchased 11 months earlier. (they have acknowledged shipping, but I have actually not received the update yet)

I'm pretty sure that the truth in labeling law falls under the FDA. And as such wouldn't apply to electronic devices or software. However, even it if it did, I doubt very seriously if the name of the product containing a number would be subject to the provision even if that number refers to a calendar year as long as the product was adequately labeled.

It puzzles and amuses me that people get so caught up in the "they are selling me old data argument". When people purchase a TV or DVD player, do they know the date of manufacture of the components. Do they know when the software was programmed? I highly doubt it. And I highly doubt that most people even give it a second thought.

yay, there goes another 75

yay, there goes another 75 bux :/

Callling it 1009 Instead of 2008 May Be Dishonest, But...

Aren't 2009 cars coming out about the same time? Each year, it seems like next year's models are coming out a week earlier. Maybe next year you can buy a 2011 car before 2010.

i look at it this way...

giving it the name of the latter year makes you feel so in the future. it's like buying a madden football video game.

because it is totally incorrect. The FACT is I purchased my nuvi 350 on 1/8/2007 and received the FREE 2008 update in mid-September 2007.

Fact

As I posted earlier:

I actually got updated maps after a recent (2 weeks ago) registration on a Nuvi 350 that I had purchased 11 months earlier. (they have acknowledged shipping, but I have actually not received the update yet)

Update:

Yesterday I received the update maps on CD and they loaded nicely!

free update

I've just helped my mother-in-law purchase a 350nuvi a few weeks ago (she wanted that model).

I'm hitting up Garmin support through email for a free update, I'll keep yall posted. First attempt failed horribly, they gave me detailed instructions on how to create pois using excel. I told them I don't have MS office on my personal pc. I'll keep yall posted. wink

What updates?

If you just bought it, what updates is it that you expect to get? It should have the current maps in it.

And you don't need Excel to create custom POIs. OpenOffice, Wordpad, Notepad, etc. will all work just fine.

No Need To Be Worried

Don't get your undies in a bundle over this update. Last year I registered my 350 on April 17th, when the map update was released in August I was given it free (from the postings at the time it seems almost everybody on this message board got it free). So don't worry if you got your GPSr for Christmas or even a few months before or after you will most likely get it free.

i should get it

they said I should get it when it comes out. she said that if i don't get an email by May to give them a call. I've been added to the list to receive an update.

I heard it through the Grape vine...

New mapping will be out sooner than most think...
