Alerts

When approaching a poi with an alert, what happens?

Will the alert repeat until you reach the poi? If so, how often?

Can the alert be cancelled after the first one?

Thanks,

Mike

On my C330 & C340 the alert goes away when I reach the POI. The alert - the red line with text" stays on the screen UNLESS I stop prior to reaching the POI.(like at a red light). When I start up again (> 0 mph) I get the ding-ding and the alert bar reappears !
I'm don't know how to stop alert once it shows !
I only get the audible alert once UNLESS I stop prior to reaching the POI.

You are missing all the fun. Why not set up a test POI a mile from your house and on the route to one of your favorites. You could take an existing file from here and change the coordinates, try it with any mp3 sound and the default, run a simulated ride to the favorite beyond the POI and see what actually happens.

With my unit they repeat, too often, so I generally choose the simple default sounds. An alternative would be to create an mp3 that has enough dead space after the sound to last until you've passed the POI and the alert is cancelled.

Since the audio alert is the only bothersome part, if you route your sound through your radio, you can just turn the sound down. If you are using the internal speakers, you can fake a switch to the FM transmitter (a double-tap of the power button on my model) and that would mute the speakers until you switched back.

Prox vs. speed alerts

It usually depends on the kind of alert I believe.

With a proximity alert, I think it will make an audible alert once at the distance you set before the POI. It may stay on the screen until you pass it, but I am not sure of that.

With a speed alert, I believe it will alert you once when you approach the speed zone. If you are under the speed alert setting, I think that is it. But if you are above the speed set, it will keep alerting you until you slow below the speed setting or you pass the location. This is why you may want to set the speed alerts higher than the speed limit.

For example, if you have school zones in your GPS and school zones in your area are generally 20 mph, most of us would set the speed alert for 20. But then when we get to a school zone, most of us tend to slow down part way, say 25+ rather than to 20 and if it is night time or a weekend when the zone is not being enforced we would stay at, for example, the 35 mph speed limit of that street. Well the alert goes off the entire time you are approaching the zone, even if going 25. Instead you might consider setting the speed alert for 30 mph. You will get the alert when you approach, will need to slow down, but the alert will STOP annoying you once you drop below 30. You already know the zone is coming, you already are slowing down, so you don't really need to be nagged all the way down to 20.

I wonder

I wonder if this could differ between units. There have been complaints that the repetitive rest stop alerts drive people crazy if they have them set for miles in advance. And I get multiple warnings on the redlight cameras, but I admit that could be because of stop and go driving which could trigger the re-alert.

Could be...

Ya, probably does differ from model to model. Also I have only had my GPS since Xmas and really haven't used it very much since I haven't made any longer trips where I really needed it (a couple/few times) so I am not yet familiar with exactly how my model 200 handles speed or prox. alerts with respect to each other.
