Map update -- C330

Can anyone give guidance on updating my maps? $70 is pretty steap for a map that is shortly outdated (DC area is always changing...)
1) Are the maps updated on a schedule (ie can I buy right after an update?)
2) Is there an alternative to paying full freight through Garmin? (3rd party, sales etc?)

1) The North America map updates are typically released once per year, typically in the spring. The current version (v2008) was released in May 2007.
2) You can get the update from Provantage for under $60.

Note that the full map update will not fit on the c330. You will have to select between the lower 48 or Canada.
If you recently purchased
If you recently purchased your c330 and can prove it, call Garmin directly and talk to them about the update discounted. Ask politely, of course. They have unmatched customer service.

Or, you could wait a couple of months and get the new one.
Also, on the C330 you can only load either the lower 48 section of the map OR Canada (it is explained during update) due to memory availability.
