Phone numbers

I've noticed that the phone numbers for custom POI's are often cut off on their information page. I'm concerned mostly with RV Parks, but it probably happens with others too. Addresses come first and are usually complete. I have the nuvi 200. Would the widescreen show complete phone numbers?

I don't know how to create POI's so this question may sound stupid. Is there a way to create them with the phone number appearing first? I don't need the addresses since the GPS will get me there, but I often want to call them.

Edit the poi file

You could always edit the poi file to eliminate/move the phone numbers. Open it in excel or notepad, edit the file, and save it as a .csv file.

Make a copy of the file to edit. Leave the original in case something goes awry.

In a POI file (for garmin)

In a POI file (for garmin) you have 4 fields that it reads. The first two are for the coordinates and the 3rd is for the name and the 4th is for address/phone numbers/whatever you want to put.

If you have multiple lines perhaps it is too much to display. I usually keep them as...

Line 1 - addr1
Line 2 - Addr2
Line 3 - City, State, Zip
Line 4 - Phone

Now, if you put the state and zip on separate lines, it may be too much to display.

So, as long as the coordinates are there, it doesn't need the address? Therefore, I could open in Excel, leave the coordinates and name alone, delete address (except for maybe city and state), and move the phone number to the field right after the name? And then when I save the edited file, would it save as .csv or would I have to change the extension to that from .exl?

I assume I can copy and paste a whole bunch of phone numbers at the same time or this will be very time consuming.

I would rearrange the data

I would rearrange the data instead of deleting it.

Warning: coordinates may not be 100% correct.

Avoid editing each entry manually (mass changes whenever possible)

Here are some excel useful hints/utilities

Which Poi file are you using?

If you can't do it via mass changes...post up again
and if I have time I will help you out

RV Parks

Which rv park poi are you referring to. I have created a number of the rv park listings and maybe I can help you.

RV Parks

Coast to Coast, CTC-Encore, GNP, KOA, Jellystone, Good Sam, Passport America, Public, US & State.

I have changed some of the names slightly from their original file names. And, I can't remember, a couple may have come from another POI site.

Thanks.

Those, no doubt, are the problem POI's, huh mahoney? smile

I did generate coast to coast, encore, gnp and good sam. Each of these contain campground name, city , state and telephone number. I did not include the address. I did not feel that the addresses needed to be included. When I developed these poi's, I felt that the campground name and location (city and state) needed to be displayed followed by the phone number. How many letters/digits can be displayed on your gps?
For the passport america file, I was not the original author, but I have been making updates. I just continued with the original format which included the addresses. The only way that I know how to delete just the addresses would be line by line, using excel or notepad.
I did not generate any of the others that you listed, but could be changed using the same method. Maybe someone else has an easier method.

Not in the next field

I believe the numbers need to stay in the field they are in (with the address). I could be wrong.

RV Parks

mahoney,

The number of characters and spaces depends on whether they are caps, punctuation, spaces, numbers. I'll give you an example for each file you work on, including PA. If you want more examples, just let me know. I have the nuvi 200. I don't know if a widescreen would make a difference.

In the Encore file regarding Sunshine RV, Harlingen, TX, it shows two lines before the alert information. The first line ends with Resort (complete word). Second line begins with a comma and ends with 41, an incomplete phone number.

In the Coast to Coast file, regarding Lake Point Resort, Canyon Lake, TX, it shows two lines. The first line ends with Resort,(comma incl.), then there is a lot of space since the next word won't fit on that line. The second line begins with Canyon and ends with 935-, an incomplete phone number.

In the GNP file, regarding Mission Gardens, Mission,TX, it shows two lines. The first line ends with an. The second line begins with d (in this case it split the word "and") and ends with 956, an incomplete phone number.

In the Good Sam file regarding Admiralty RV, San Antonio, TX, the first line ends with San, the second line begins with Antonio and ends with -7, an incomplete phone number.

In the Passport America file regarding TX Braunig Lake, San Antonio, the first line ends with 13550, the second line begins with Donop and ends with (877, an incomplete phone number.

I'm just giving examples of some parks with incomplete phone numbers. Parks with shorter names or cities have complete phone numbers. And it is smart that you have left out the street addresses. Despite these problems, the files are very useful and I appreciate the work you have done so that I can have them on my GPS.

Looking at the KOA and Jellystone files on the GPS, there are two lines (or fields) available on the screen which allow small characters. They come below the alert, distance, speed lines, which are also in small characters. So the city, state, and phone number would fit there. Unfortunately, the KOA and Jellystone files (which I know are not yours) also put the street addresses on those lines so that the phone numbers are also often cut off for them.

It appears to me the only fail-safe way to do it without cutting off phone numbers, is to only put the RV park name in the first two lines (large characters). Then in the bottom two small character lines after alert, distance, speed, put the city, state and phone number.

dminz,
It appears that the nuvi 200 is limited to 25 letters/numerals,commas,spaces in the top line and a like number in the 2nd line and you will have to decide how to alter the file. My personal preference is to have the campground name, city and state in one place and the telephone number in the next field. That certainly would be the easiest change to cut and paste the phone numbers into the next excel column. That may not solve all the problems , since some of the titles are very long. When the campgrounds did not have full hookups, I stated that at the beginning of the line. Again, that was my personal preference. I wanted to know that information upfront.
I just checked my 7200 for any similar problems and luckily I didn't have any.
I don't know if this would have any affect on your display. If you have alerts set for the campgrounds, try turning those off. If this is not the problem, I guess that you will have to modify the files to fit your preferences.

However, it has plenty more places to display data!

I had a quick look at the "Good Sam" file - since each record is identical in layour, it was quite easy to convert to .gpx format and at the same time, place the City, State & phone numbers in their 'proper' places.

This is how the "Admiralty RV Resort" example now displays:

Nüvi 310 (phone # is dialable)
arrow http://geepeeex.googlepages.com/N310admiral.jpg

StreetPilot C510 (more like the Nüvi 200)
arrow http://geepeeex.googlepages.com/C510admiral.jpg

I'l upload the re-formatted .gpx file to POI-Factory.

I used GeePeeEx Editor to perform the conversion, but any fully-featured POI Editor/Creator software could be used smile

Try this

Encore file - Split the file from 3 columns to 4
(long, lat, name, city/st/phone). open the poi in notepad. Do a find/replace changing

resort, (and a space after the comma) to
resort"," (no spaces)

Save file and then open in Excel. Fix any other entries that do not have the word "resort" in it. Add line breaks on the fourth column get the phone number on it own line.

Do the same for the other files breaking the poi from three fields to four.

This may reduce the amount of display error.

Thanks, I'll play around with .gpx and see if I can learn how to do it.

The KOA and Jellystone files, also available from this site, use the extra lines in .csv format. I guess you are saying that it easier to convert to .gpx than try to move things around in .csv.

.csv files can be easily reformatted with a few key mass changes.

DRMCMTR,
The file you sent worked fine. Everything was in the proper place and all the phone numbers were complete. How did you make the mass changes?
