Displaying owner info

Is it possible to replace the startup warning screen with the owner's name and contact info?

Splash yes, warning no

You cannot change the warning screen. You can change the initial splash screen to do what you suggest, and you can find many posts on the subject by searching for "splash". The method of changing that screen differs depending on the unit.

BTW, you might want to add the model of your unit to your signature under your profile/account.

RE: Displaying Owner Info

Yes.

Basic instructions: Just create your splash screen the way you want using a photo-editing software, then load that picture into the GPSr like you would any other picture. Then in the settings of your GPSr, select that picture as your splash screen.

I got that idea from one of the other posters on this site. My splash screen just says, "If found, please contact [my email address]."

Here's a recent thread on splash screens.

BentBiker had it right

BentBiker's response was the correct one for your question.

The other responses were, however, great alternatives to what you wanted to do.

So, the thief steals the

confused

So, the thief steals the unit... turns it on... a splash screen gives your name and address. Hmmmm... so, even if you use the Garmin lock, now he knows where to go to unlock the unit. Of course, even if you only give a name and phone number he could just go onto Google to find the address. I've met a LOT of honest thieves that would just return something that didn't work after they stole it. mrgreen

"Honest" thieves? ;-)

I don't think anyone here advised putting our address on the splash screen, but it does bring up a concern. In Illinois, we are required to keep the vehicle registration card and our insurance certificate card in the vehicle. Once your window has been smashed, the thieves have access to those documents with your name and address that are in your glove box. Those things have no street value for the smash 'n grab artists, but it is still pause for thought. Having a home location set that is 2 blocks away from your house is an empty precaution if your name and address is right there in the glove box.

Splash screen ID

I have the Garmin lock set. My splash screen displays a cell telephone number and e-mail address should it be lost and found by an honest person. Neither a cell phone nor e-mail address is traceable to a location, so those are what you should use as contact information.

Agreed

I agree with the comment made by RGLudlow"splash screen displays a cell telephone number and e-mail address should it be lost and found by an honest person." If you include something make it somewhat generic. The other option is to always take it with you or lock it in the glove box or trunk.

Giving some scumbag any info

Giving some scumbag any info about yourself is not the best of idea's.

I would like to see someone reputable like POI-factory keep a "registration data base" and issue little metal or foil stickers and unique ID numbers assigned to that registration (If found contact XXX company @ 1-800 phone #, Unit # 1234). Kind of like some companies do with "found" keys or pets.

Should someone "find" a unit, they could contact the data base keeper and the data base keeper could contact the rightful owner. Might even be a way for the data base keeper to make a few bucks or at least break even on costs.

Another good "return to me" method is to engrave or mark your unit with your drivers license number (NOT your SSN!), any LEO can run the number and find you.

I use the "sally port" (where we transfer prisoners to and from our jail) as my security location. I can just see some dumb crook sitting there trying to unlock my unit while other cops come and go and while being on security camera.

That isn't entirely true. I have gotten personal information from email addresses only. It isn't an easy thing to do, and most wouldn't even attempt to do it, but it is possible.

Illinois does not require

Illinois does not require any driver to keep their vehicle registration card in the car. The police officer has access to that info when he runs the license plate number through the Sec of State computer. No Officer will ever ask a driver for the registration only there proof of insurance.

Cell phone and a tracking ruse

I made a splash screen with a large warning triangle and the warning:
"Stolen GPS Tracking Activated"

I also included my cell phone, e.g. "For Reward Call 123-456-7890"

This is for any honest folks who come across my GPSr.
