Chatty Charley thread for the week of February 11th 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

Minus 13 with wind chill this morning

I'm sure your weather is colder, but we are experiencing cold weather as well.

It's been snowy off and on since Thursday and more to come tomorrow night.

We came back from Arizona last Wed. night (into Manchester, NH), just in time for the Thursday storm!

So what is extreme to you. I live in the Great White North and last week most days didn't get above -30C/-22F and with the wind chill it felt like -40C/F and BTW everyone just deals with it and goes to work. Now that's what I call knowing your alive.

Wow. I thought 7 degrees was

Wow. I thought 7 degrees was bad. We are in a heat wave compared to you guys.

San DIego was unseasonably warm

Took our son to Legoland for the first time... It was sunny and warm... shorts and T-shirts weather.

Makes up for the last month of rain, gloom, and mudslides I guess...

weather

T-shirts and shorts........I can only wish. Here in western Michigan we got blasted with cold weather got down to -20 with wind chill and the counties around here declared a county emergecy and shut down all highways and raods due to white out from the storm.......t-shirts and shorts I wish......

Lawn & Garden Weekend

Our local weaterman was telling everyone on Friday that this past weekend was going to be perfect to get outside and do a bit of lawn and garden work. His assessment was right on the money. Highs were in the 70's the weekend. It was an absolutely perfect weather day for a bit of gardening in shorts and a T shirt.

(My Garmin map version 2008 update which arrived on Friday had to be put on hold until evening hours.)

All in the Eye of the Beholder

I guess it's all up to what you are accustomed too. Here when it goes up to -20 people start taking their winter coats off and spend as much time outside enjoying the fresh air. We've only had one snow day (last year)in the past 20 years and that was only a half day when a blizzard of 8 inches and wind of 60 mph caused the hole city to be in a white out. The next day it was back to normal. As for cutting the grass that starts sometime in May.

If you're interested in seeing something truly COOL take a look at this vid. BTW it's not me doing the experiment

San Antonio area

In the 70's, except occasionally goes into 80's. Winter lasted one month, 45-60 degrees, and spring is now here.

On the Road

Took my C340 to Chicago last weekend, and let Emily lead me about with splendid results. We ended up one evening at a Greek restaurant, Yanni's, that offered the most exquisite meal I've ever eaten in my life, at a fairly reasonable price. Nice work, Emily. We stayed away from the skyscraper canyons and had no trouble at all, even when the temperature dropped well below zero (F).

YouTube

Ok, here is an idiot (me)! How do you put a file on YouTube? I tried the other night (with beer in me, which is probably the issue) and it kept asking me for my email. Then finally, after multiple tries, it returned me to the upload screen, but I didn't see a place to browse for my file and upload it.

Warmed up here

After several days in the teens with sub-zero wind chill, and after eight inches of snow (unusual for this area), it finally warmed up to the 40s.

Spring next month.

Ice Fishing this week

I'm going up to Lake of the Woods on the Canada/Minnesota border and they had actual temps of -40 degrees there. Not looking forward to that kind of cold. Kills a car battery in no time.

Anyone else here ride a bike?

I recently (due to health reasons) have started to get into bicycling. I purchased a "decent" bike and now I am considering entering the 5 borough, 42 mile bike tour in NY in May!...(its a tour, not a race!). That gives me a couple of months to get in shape. The bike is a 21 speed comfort bike...relaxed riding position, ample saddle with suspension on the fork and seat... made by GIANT.

I did that ride in 2006 with my then 1 1/2 year old in a bike trailer, wound up doing most of the ride with Anthony Edwards (Dr. Greene from ER) and 3 of his kids.

Anyone else here ride a bike?

I have a sport touring bike by Univega. It's about 20 years old, and I wore out the rear rim, which I replaced with a new rim. I must have 15000 miles on that bike. I used to ride 800-1200 miles a year. That was during the months March to November. I don't like to ride in cold weather.

Finally my bad knees are starting to bother me, so I am walking more at the golf course instead of riding a bike.

The most I ever rode in one day was 120 miles. For training I ride a few 12 mile rides, then some 16s. Then a couple of 22, then 35. After that I ride a few at 60 or so. Once I can ride 60, 100 miles a day is about the same: it just takes longer!

I like to ride the quiet county roads in Ohio. There are plenty of them, and they are generally well paved and maintained.

These kids got it so easy today, we never ever had cold days and walked just as far, 10 inches of snow would have done it though.

Remember, it was the first win for the breed in the history of the show (I believe), so it could be a while til it happens again.

Beagles are the best. We have 1 pure bred beagle and a beagle shih-tzu mix. Along with an ankle biter and a pure bred lab.

Miss POI will be spending time with her kids today but will be working this evening. I volunteer at my preschoolers school once a month and today is that day. I have a full moderation queue to take care of tonight, so if you have a file that is not up on the site yet, it will be published after 5:00 this evening.

Thanks for your understanding.

Watched Assasination of Jesse James...

last night; good movie. Pacing was a little slow and the movie was quite long but there was some awesome acting. Brad Pit as Jessie James, Casey Affleck as Robert Ford, and Sam Rockwell as Charlie Ford all did a great job. Sam Shepard played Frank James and had a good screen presence even though he was only in the movie for about 20 minutes.

Anyone else see it?

Welcome

I've seen old pictures of Jesse James and Brad Pitt looks nothing like him. It irritates me when historical movies don't make an effort to be somewhat authentic.

It's not snow

It's time-release rain.

And we're due about 4" more of it today...with 20-40mph winds, gusting to 50; and temps falling to the single digits above zero resulting in dangerous wind-chills.

AlGORE! I want some of that global warming, and I want it NOW!!! smile
