I thought that it would be cool to see what names people have given their GPS units and maybe why you named it such.
I named mine Sophia. I did this because there is a dumb movie called "How to lose a guy in 10 days" and in it the girl names the guys penis "Princess Sophia" and I thought that by giving it that name you emasculate this man...well the traditional Joke about man is that he always feel emasculated about asking for directions and well I ask the GPS unit for directions all the time. You get the idea =)
Please share your stories and names.
My Granddaughter nemed my Streetpilot c55 Greta Garmin. Seemed to fit. Now all GPSs are called Gretas in our house. Such To a friend I heard you bought a Greta. "A What?'
That's the name of the voice on my garmin so that's what I call her.
But eventually, every piece of electronics becomes a FRED...as in Freaking Retarded Electronic Device.
Foiling Revenue Enhancing Devices
The FREDs have it...
Our 2 year old calls it GeePS, and uses it to talk to the satellites.
Wife calls my 2720 Suzy-Q, I don't have a name for the wife's 760.
I have always called mine Stephine. From about nine years ago when i used it in my Hertz Cars. Now I use the same name in my Nuvi and use the Australian Female voice. And yes she does have an Attitude when she is recalculating.
How about just plain GPS
I use the Karen voice and in Australia a woman is generally called Sheila.
We call it "the GPS", and sometimes "the Nuvi".
I wish Garmin created a softer, sexier voice profile. It should not be any more difficult than creating any other voice profile. But I doubt Garmin will do it.
.. just realized someone here owns a magellan..
i have a joking laugh at my friends who own one. it's a filipino thing.
friend- "dang it my gps can never get me to my destination"
me- "what do you have?"
friend- "a megallan"
me- "there's your answer! you're destined to not get to your destination!"
I have a 2720, and use the British female voice Emily, so it is called Emily. Well, I just got a new 855 and use the same voice - but thought I needed a different name to keep them separate - since Emily is used, this one is Emma.
mines my user name =)
Carmen the Garmin rides in Rhonda the Honda. I guess I got a thing for rhymes.
Rhyming your words?
It's the craziest thing I ever heard!
Please delete, posted twice accidentally
My son loves mine. Infact he gets angry if I don't follow the order to turn!
Some pretty clever names since I posted my GPSR's name "Critter", I'm enjoying them.
Hi there! Well it's not very original but the name just was said and it stuck. It seemed natural at the time. We have a Garmin hence, Judy...Garmin (I know, Big groan)
Although a lot of the time especially at drive-thru's she is addressed as "Ok, your going to have to be quiet for awhile" before hitting the mute. :0)
Gladis....Just glad I got a Garmin
Somehow -- it just seems to fit
Mine is Gypsy Rhodes, for obvious reasons.
Sometimes it's $%@&)!!%
On this website looking for some clever names, and found quite a few! Thanks to you all. Wanted to comment on "Garminator", because my son always imitates his grandpa's garmin in a Schwarzenegger voice. It is hilarious! "Turn around. Now! Head to the choppah! What are you doing?! I said left!" It's much more entertaining than "recalculating."
Hi there...I'm a Washington reporter with the L.A. Times, writing about the relationships people have with their GPS devices. Came upon your comments and wonder, would you care to be interviewed by phone? It's a light kind of story, man and his machine sort of thing. If so, please contact me at my email address: firstname.lastname@example.org
My GPSs have been called Betty, from the pilot's slang "Bitchin Betty" who's voice warned them to pull up, etc. Anyone that's had the pleaseure of "off route, recalculating" can understand the sentiment. Actually, almost everyone who hung out in the Garmin forum of the board I used then call their Garmin the same name.
All the the time, talking, re-calculating, etc, etc! Gabby, that fits her perfectly!
After the near-miss candidate for French presidency... It was amazing all the stupid things she was allowed to blurt out in front of people and cameras ! And yes, that was before I'd put my device on mute... I guess I could change the nickname to Marceau. Not the actress, the mime !
I named mine Little Red Riding Hood since she (actually female Australian Karen) resides in my red 4Runner
My GPS is named Boomquesha. I dont know why I came up with that name for my Nuvi 360, as my former Nuvi 200 was named Caroline.
I resemble that!!!
I call my GPS "Birdie". I guess I chose the name because I play a lot of golf. When I need to use the GPS to find something or to get me to a new destination, I tell my wife; "Birdie knows where it is".
Ethel, a friend and I were on a business trip and had a "Never Lost" in the rental and he called it Ethel. Can't really remember why.
I refer to mine as Samantha!
We've always called her Miss Nuvi: "Miss Nuvi knows what to do", we tell each other. To Miss Nuvi: "Miss Nuvi, I'm not going to do that", "Miss Nuvi, please recalculate." "Thank you, Miss Nuvi."
is the name my daughter gave it while in route to her first Bradley class. She was so sure the directions sent to her from the teacher would be faster because we were running late. Before that episode it's only name was "the GPS".
I like "Re-calc", because re-calculating is what it says the most.
I simply call it...The Geepus.
My Copilot = My Baby
My Nuvi = Damn Thing
My dad calls his GyPSy.
Emma going the wrong way? Emma suppose to turn? On and On....
screaming Samuel L Jackson to be my turn by turn director and will go apesh*t when i miss a turn.
Daniel is my GPS's name. Gotta say it in an English accent though.
Returning from Florida, I used both the 1490t & the 295W while navigating. I dubbed them Jill & Gillette.
I think I got everybody beat on this one. I wanted a name that would be as thought the military named it. Like Hummer is for HUMMWV High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle. So mine is V.E.R.N.A. "Very Expensive Road Navigation Assistant. Well what do y'all think?
Since I have Karen Jacobsen as my voice, I call it Karen. My wife calls it Matilda.
I call mine either "Jippis" or "Rosie".
I often call mine by whatever voice I'm using, and since I did a voice set with my good friend, I often call it by her name, as does she when she's in the car with me.
