Post your GPS names

I thought that it would be cool to see what names people have given their GPS units and maybe why you named it such.

I named mine Sophia. I did this because there is a dumb movie called "How to lose a guy in 10 days" and in it the girl names the guys penis "Princess Sophia" and I thought that by giving it that name you emasculate this man...well the traditional Joke about man is that he always feel emasculated about asking for directions and well I ask the GPS unit for directions all the time. You get the idea =)

Please share your stories and names.

Called my poor GPS some horrible things..

Stupid! Ugly! Idiot! Dummy! Meathead! Dolt! Pudden-head! Stupe! Been! Blockhead! Dillard, Pollack! Dumb-ass! Dunce! Knucklehead! Muttonhead! Numskull! Klutz!

Even after all that it still answers up.. Too bad there aren't any treats for a GPS razz

Now I call it Carnac...

Berta

I named mine "Berta" and with the early Garmins you could change the "recaclculating" announcement, I changed it to:

"Did you not understand me? Now listen to what I say!"

I sure do miss that function on the newer Garmins.

I miss the recalculating

I miss the recalculating function, also. It might be 15 or 20 minutes before I figure out I missed a turn.

Funny.

It's funny how this 8 year old thread lay dormant for almost 3 years and all of a sudden is popular again. cool

Because of "Her"

As in the movie?

In any case, I was very pleased to notice that my new Nuvi no longer says "Recalculating".... when re-planning a route. that was such a turn-off.

Funny...I guess

In 3 years, I'm sure there are a number of folks who were not around the last time this thread was answered. It's always new to someone. grin

Thought it about time

Thought it about time to resurrect this thread. It has been a while since there was any activity in it.

A couple years ago I upgraded to a 3597 and it uses a wake up phrase to enable voice input. As I had retired "Gertie", my 865 I named this one Roadie because its primary use is for road trips. Well lately, Roadie has been seemingly screwing up on the directions so much I changed the wake up phrase. I now say "Hey Stupid! and it responds "Please say a command." Think I finally got it right.

This is a family website!

I can't print that name here. Did I use that joke before in the thread? Wouldn't be a surprise. But when I'm addressing my GPS, I'm usually angry about missing a turn or something that was entirely the GPS' fault... not mine, of course.

George

Ever since my very first GPS (a huge Magellan in the early 1990s) was a source of at least some navigation advice in the car, I've called each successive GPS George.

The original thought was a somewhat remote reference to the habit of World War II aircrew calling the autopilot George. That habit persists in some portions of the flying community to this day, though the reference is commonly across the range of automated functions, and not just the classic autopilot function.

Another Karen

I use Karen also, but I have the voice command set to "Wake up, mate!)

Just finished an almost 3,000 mile trip from Mexico to home.
After a couple of BAD misdirections along the way which I was able to detect after the fact, the mildest name I called the 2797 was "Stupid Idiot".

I think we develop a filter that ignores things like this and certain people.

Kinda like headphones with ambient noise canceling. We adapt and develop our own "noise canceling" capability. I know my car has the beeping to remind me that I left my keys in the ignition, but I just don't hear it anymore.

And our wives think we are deaf. lol.

If I see that my husband is blocking me out I take that opportunity to tell him something I need to tell him but really don't want to. Then when it comes up later I can say I told you that. smile

As my GPS is also my smartphone...

...I call my GPS/smartphone Priss. Because it's a Nexus 6. (The SO's Nex6 is named Roy, as in Roy Batty. Yes, we are incorrigible geeks...)

It also is occasionally termed Your Highness because I tend to have a habit of using a British English voice based on, well, HRH The Queen. grin (I tend to not be fond of most American English voices for GPS units. They always tend to get set to British English or Australian English.)

If I had any doubt

that I am wired a bit differently than most people, this thread would do it.

Unlike most of the people who have posted previously, I have not personified my GPS. The closest I have come to that is when I have been talking about it with someone and called it "the TomTom".

GPS Name

Named ours Millie
Do not remember why

Ours is...

Helga Sue or just Helga for short. smile

Lost or DeAlley

Farmers fields with very mature trees that have never had a true road through them. That is lost.

DeAlley because 40% of the directions seem to include taking de alley to get to that farmers field.

And I will not do a U-Turn to cross a bridge that was taken out 10 years ago. I just crossed its replacement 50 yards to the right after being stopped by a guard rail. But, it did quit nagging after about 10 miles.
Surprised it didn't call me the same names I was calling it.
