Creating a POI File

I am trying to experiment with creating a POI file. It seems I can't create a .CSV file in Notepad or Microsoft Excel.

How do you do a save as and make the file extension .CSV.

Does the POI loader automaticallly do this when you load the file into your GPS. What file extension do you use to make the file? ----------------Earl Leeson

CSV

If you create the file in Excel, you can save it in CSV format by using: File > Save As > Save as type: CSV

By setting the save as type to CSV, Excel will use the proper extension and format the data as comma separated values.

If you create the file in Notepad, you'll need to manually type in the extension following the filename (for example: myfile.csv). If you don't type in ".csv", Notepad will automatically add ".txt" instead.

After you have a properly formatted .CSV file, You can use POI Loader. POI Loader will read the file with a .CSV extension and then create a new .GPI file that has the same information, but in a different format that's required by your Garmin GPS. You can't simply rename a .csv file to .gpi and get it to work.

CSV

Will the POI Loader create this GPI file automatically when you load the CSV file to your GPS or must do some kind of copy to get this conversion done?----Earl Leeson

POI Loader

POI Loader automatically transfers the gpi file to your GPS or a memory card. In fact, the program won't let you continue past the first screen until your GPS or memory card is connected to your PC.

It is possible you're making

It is possible you're making the extension just fine and windows is suppressing display of that extension.

I find that a maddening, counterproductive default.

and get it to work.

JM

Hi in POI-factory!
I have a Nokia 6110 Navigator Mobil phone with onboard GPS. The phone has a very good function - i have installed Garmin Mobil XT - latest version - and installed Norway Topo Maps, Blue Chart Atlantic, City Navigator NT and special chart for Greece. Very good function.
I have allso installet POI for scandinavina speed-camera - and here is the problem. The phone only warn me with a beep, reed line and camera text. The phone has a very good MP3 player - and the question is: Is it possible to get the phone to speak the warning for speed-camera? I have a file ( POI ) with build in sound for Garmin GPS - and the file has a good function on this machines. What do i do on my Nokia 6110 Navigator. Thanks in advance. ( sorry about my spelling - i'm not so good in eng. - coming from Norway )

.

The GPS firmware must have support for an MP3 player in order for the Custom Alerts to work. My guess is the that the MP3 player software on that unit is outside the GPS software, so I doubt that it will work.
