I just created a new POI Icon that i would like to use with one of the CSV files that i downloaded from this site (which has no icon). I saved it as 18x24 pixels BMP, with the same name as the csv file it should go with.
Questions:
1. Does it have to be a perfect square or will that shape work?
2. How do I know if it is 256-colors? (I think my defaulted to 24-bit)
3. When its done, is there a way to post it to the POI Icon Library here, as well as the csv page that i downloaded someone's csv from?
Thanks.

Update
I just figured out how to change from 24-bit to 8-bit (which is 256 colors in color Depth).
So the only 2 remaining questions are:
A) I know that 24x24 is legal, and 18x18 or under is preferred. Will 18x24 (a non-square) work?
and
B) What are the instructions to load it up here to this site's Icon Library, and to the download csv page for which it should go?
Thanks

answer
A) Some units will display bmp's that are not square. My c550 for example will. However, some units the bmp Must be square. Therefore, if submitting to the factory it's best to submit in the format that everyone can use.
B) Click the "icons" link at the top of the page, then scroll to the bottom

Thanks
Thanks for the answers.
Mine just DID function properly (c530) with non-square 18x24 size. So ill remember that I can do that.
I tried to make it square, but the picture doesnt do too well with it, so ill just not upload it to the site. I'm sure ill eventually find some other way to contribute here.
Which POI file?
If you click on FAQs at the top, you will see how to submit the icon. I would submit it and let Miss POI decide if it can be used or not. She is quite helpful.

Non-Square ICon
For those non-square icons you still could make them square by using Magenta in the unused areas.
Just center your non-square icon fill the blank (will be transparent) areas.

Oh ok. Well i guess ill submit it to her, and maybe a few others. I'm no graphics artist, but I know how to play around with my Editing tools, and ive made icons for every CSV that didnt have one which i have downloaded so far. I just dont really want the little grey dots.

Magenta is Magic

Really? Magenta?? Well that explains it. I just figured that people around here were really color blind!!! Or maybe that on the GPS units its hard to see icons, without some shrill bright color.
I was using Black for a background, but i suppose i should go for Magenta now. I just have to figure out how to do that in Snagit Editor 9.

The following is from my article

NOW FOR THE LARGER SPEED ICONS
Some quick icon rules (if you make your own -- but I've made some for you so you don't have to bother for now.)
* Must be of the Windows .bmp file type
* Prefix of file name MUST match the .csv or .gpx file name
* Size should be no bigger than 24 x 24 pixels
* Best to use 256 color palette with standard web safe colors
* The color 'magenta' (RGB R:255, G:0, B:255 [#ff00ff ] is treated as a transparent color)

Thats confirms it
That is the perfect information for this thread. That confirms it. Ill use 255 0 255 FF 00 FF to do the transparent background now. I have a little work to redo the icons i made, but i got the rest of the "rules" correct, based off of the data on this site.
Thanks for contributing here!
