Hi everyone,
In my endless search for stuff to put on my GPS it occurred to me that Radio Shack would be awfully handy to have in my device. I was thrilled that there was already a file for them here so I downloaded it and fired up the POI Installer. When my GPS came up it said the closest RS was 1100+ mile from my house. I know there is one like 2 miles from me and more than just that one in the Indianaplis area. What does a fella do to quench his insatiable desire for this file? I looked through the list and did not see any in Indiana on it. What to do?

Well...you could provide the person who made the Radio Shack file with the coordinates. Those could then be incorporated into the file and updated for everyones use. I'm sure some of these files have locations missing just like the information on the GPS itself. The best we can all do is provide the info when we discover it missing.
Looks like it was posted in August of 2007. You should be able to contact Auggie and he can modify it for you.
I actually just looked at the file and its incorrectly listed as Radio Shack USA when it is in fact only California locations I believe.
edit: I sent Auggie an email and hopefully he can correctly title the file so there is no confusion.

If the sites are not listed in the POI file then you need to add them, If they are in the POI file but don't show up on the GPS there is probably a mistake in the file. Probably an opening quotation mark without a close quotation mark at the end of the data. The GPS unit will read up to that and nothing after it.

OK, I will try to get the Indianapolis/Indiana ones and either make a new file or add them to the existing one. I know there is a more efficiet way to do it but I am not aware of it. The way I would do it now would be to go to the store locations, enter them into Google Earth and then get the coordinates for each one of them. Is there a better possibly automated way to do this? I was trying to figure out where the original file was showing them...I speculated California but was not totally sure.
Thanks, Dano
Google Maps and takitwithme.com is pretty effecient...
Dano,
I have been using Google Maps (not earth) which allows you to save custom maps. I then use takitwithme.com to generate a GPX file that can be loaded directly on my Garmin. You can then update your custom map fairly easily.
Downside to this method is that if you post it here and people want to be able to modify it, rather than being easy like a CSV file, a GPX file will require a special editor I believe.
On the other hand, custom maps you create in Google Maps can be made public, so you can always make the Map itself available as a link on the page here where the GPX would be located.
Anyway, the Google Maps and takitwithme.com combination is a lot of fun for creating personal GPX files. You can also download directly from takitwithme.com to a Garmin but keep in mind it does put them into the Favorites rather than a Custom POI. But again, a great way to manage your personal favorites that is very easy to edit or add to. But downside is, a one way trip into the Garmin. Things you add to favorites directly to the Garmin wouldn't be reflected back to your Google Map.
Have fun!

There is a dirty dark secret
There is a dirty dark secret to GSP mapping. Most mapping companies use the yellow and white pages feeds from the MAJOR phone companies. If a company uses a competitive phone provider (CLEC) and does not proactively provide feeds to the major phone companies , that company has dropped off the grid. that Radio Shack may be using a CLEC and therefore in not in database. I see it all the time. I am in the biz.

Radio Shack list
Hey Dano,
I downloaded the same file and found that it lists only stores in the greater Los Angeles area, even though the title says CA. The description is what confused both of us: "Rado Shack Electronic Stores all in the US".
(Technically correct. All the L.A. store are in the US.)
You are probably aware that
You are probably aware that the Nuvi already has a large number of Radio Shacks included in the data base - including those in the Indianapolis area.
If not, do a "Where To/Food,Lodging .../Spell Name/Radio Shack" search.
You won't have proximity alerts, but you will have all the Radio Shacks that you should want.

Why does Radio Shack show up under "Food and Lodging" ???
