Downloading ROUTES from Google Maps to my Garmin (Zumo 550)

Hi all:

I've come to really like using Google Maps for route planning. But, I have not been able to download those routes to my home computer or my GPSr.

Some have suggested that I save my route as a kml file and then use GPSBabel, but I've not been able to save my routes to kml files.

Can someone provide step-by-step instructions (hopefully with screen-captures?) to help me (and I suspect others as well) get this done?

Thanks in advance.

After reading on the forums

After reading on the forums about downloading maps I have been playing around with Google maps http://maps.google.com/ and downloading them to TakItWithMe http://www.takitwithme.com/ .You will need the link page from google maps to input to TakItWithMe .You will see it on right, link to this page. TakItWithMe will allow you to upload map to gps or gpx file to computer after you click on load my map.I got most of my info from this thread http://www.poi-factory.com/node/9542 scroll down a little and you will see it.

Check out a new Google Maps mapplet to do this...

You can now easily plan your trips over Google Maps and send all the markers directly to your GPS (Garmin, TomTom and gpx) using these easy webtools:

* Google Maps mapplet:

Get it here: http://tinyurl.com/yrqf2w

* Nav'it! Google Maps Bookmarklet:

Get it here: http://www.nav2us.com/cliente/travel

* Copy'n'Paste from Google Maps, something similar to the "takeitwithme" tool:

Get it here: http://www.nav2us.com/cliente/travel and click on tab called "Others..."

Thanks and enjoy!

Downloading ROUTES from Google Maps to my Garmin (Zumo 550)

I can almost make this work but not quite.
I can create a route using Google maps.
I can create a GPX file using takeitwithme and download it to my Zumo 550.
Problem is that the GPX file created has so many points that the navigation system cannot cope with it. I get a message saying that it's too big.
Anyone got any ideas on this apart from writing a utility to strip out 80% of the points in the file?

Many thanks

Mike
