Route management on Nuvi 700 and 800 series

Question about managing routes. From what I have read, up to 10 routes can be stored on the unit. These units also have SD or micro SD card options.

Is it possible to store routes and waypoints in multiple files on the SD card. Then, is there an SD card utility screen on the Nuvi to allow renaming one of the route containing files to be the "active" file for the Nuvi. If this is possible, then the 10 route limit would not be so limiting.

.

I'm not sure exactly how the file management works on the nuvis, but based upon testing that I did on my Zumo this would work.

The Zumo has a limit of 50 routes that it can store in active memory. I created a MapSource file of 62 routes, saved it as a GPX, copied that GPX file to the SD and the routes showed up on the Import Data list in the Zumo.

In theory, you could do the same thing with a Waypoint file if you needed to have access to more than 500 Favorites.

Note that it is not necessary to send the Waypoints that are associated with a route to the the GPS unit. At least it's not with the Zumo. I rarely send the Waypoints with my routes.

It should be noted that the routes MUST be imported to the unit before they can be used, so if you already have 10 stored, you would have to delete before you imported more. But if they are all in a GPX file, you could presumably reimport them if needed.

I personally, never have a need to keep a bunch of routes on the unit. I tend to load and unload them as I go. But if you were going on a long trip and needed more routes than the unit will hold, then the GPX method should be a suitable work around.

More than 10 routes on the 750

As a test I transfered 14 routes from MapSource to my 750 (not using a SD card) and all showed in the Import Data list. So it indeed appears that you can transfer more than 10 routes but can only have up to 10 active at one time. I suspect the actual limit is quite high and may only be subject to memory availability. With the 750 you do not need to transfer the waypoints associated with the routes and I tend not to.

Thanks

Glad to know it can handle more than 10.
