Different routes to and from

I've noticed that my Garmin C550 somtimes gives me different routes for going between the same places depending on the direction of travel. For example when I go to work from home, it wants to take me one way and when I come home from work it wants to take me another way (the two ways are quite different). When I recently went to Florida from Indiana it wanted to take me down through Atlanta, but when I came back to Indiana, it wanted to take me up through South Carolina and Knoxville, Tn. (which is far away from Atlanta).

Do others see this and if they do, how do you know which way is better?

i found this to be true on

i found this to be true on my c530.
i got the software from garmin and run the trip both ways on the pc before leaving. the dvd is free from garmin for the asking

Which software?

Which software are you suggesting? Is there a software program that runs on a PC that emulates the trip on the GPS?

yes, the same as the maps in

yes, the same as the maps in the c530 and i believe c550 its "CityNavigator NT v8 " call garmin and hang on to the phone for 15 min and they will send it to u free. even if it says its the same map some of the routes or different but its a great tool to have. u can not send routes to ur gps though.

Routes

After you enter your destination into the GPS unit, you could look up something along the alternate route and add it as an additional stop on the way to your destination.

I've noticed on shorter routes around my region that the unit will take me mostly on the main routes back and forth. I have the unit set up to take me the fastest way. When I take a turn from the route (to take the shorcut) and it recalculates the trip and arrival time for me, its usually only a minute or so difference going on the alternate route. Depending on the weather and traffic, I now stick to the main routes when traveling now because I've realized that I'm not saving all that much time. I use to think I was saving all kinds of time going across the "shortcuts", but I really wasn't.

Different Routes

I think it has a lot to do with the direction your car is pointing when you hit the go button.

If I am in the garage, it takes me one way. If I wait until I back out and am in the street headed in the direction I want to go, it takes me another way.

Too you can wait until you get underway and it will adjust.---------Earl Leeson

They Should

I think they should a least have a ISO image file for download on the web site. After all we did pay alot of money for these units, you would think they would stick a $1 DVD in the box so you would have it at purchase time.

Two Routes

Hello Ozoneman My Garmin 2720 does the same thing so a while back i called Garmin and talked to a Tech He told me that is normal here is his reason he said that where every you go from point a to point b one way and then you want to go back if a different satalite picks up where you are located at it will route you the fastest way back they why you get two different routings so he says Take Care Auggie

that makes sense. my c530

that makes sense. my c530 always gives me the same 2 different routes. the earth moves and so do the satalites. u would thnk that u would get the same route every now and then.

different route

I have the Nuvi 660 and it gives me the same route every time. As with an earlier post could have something to do with the direction you are pointed and both routes are very close in distance.

Ismonop

I don't have any "avoidances" however I have it set for fastest route.

For the others in this thread, I think it is wacking that the system tells me to go from Indianapolis, down through Louisville and Nashville on I-65, go to Chattanoga, TN on I-24 and then through Atlanta by I-75 to get to Jacksonville, Florida by I-10 and then to return it takes me a completely different way pass Savannah, SC, on I-95 then through Columbia, SC on I-26 to Asheville, NC and then on I-40 to Knoxville, Tn and then up I-75 to Lexington, KY on to Louisville, Ky on I-64 and back to Louisville. Going the two different ways ended up taking about the same travel time (14 hours) with the exception of not going through Atlanta traffic on the way back which caused a 1-hour delay on the way down (total of 15 hours).

Routes generally are good

I use Mapsource and my Garmin 2720 - also, I have been using GPS' for 10 years. The algorithm that calculates routes is generally fairly good, however, the problem it is solving does not have a single, definite, best solution. Many possible routes are good, some are better than good, some worse. There are thousands of possible routes.

The great thing about a GPS w/routing, is it will get to where you want to be, fairly efficiently. So, using it on a trip, without any pre-planning works fine.

However, if one spends some time with Mapsource, looking at the map, making value trade-offs - speed vs distance, avoiding places you may prefer to avoid, going through placing you prefer to go through are value decisions the GPS cannot make. Therefore, when a new route is important to me, I spend a few minutes trying out route options on Mapsource until I am satisfied with the route, then download that route to the GPS and use it.

What is really nice, is that if I find that in the real world, my custom route is not so good, I can stop the current pre-defined route and have the GPS make a brand new route based only on current location and destination, and go with that.

The longer the trip, more time I'll spend with Mapsource in advance!
