2008 Map Update & Mapsource

I have a 530 and asked for and received a copy of the 2008 map update. Because I need to have both the US and Canada I wanted to load Canada to an SD card. Before I erased the existing maps on the GPSr I wanted to be sure that the new maps would include certain highway updates. Here is what I found on the latest map source (Dec 4, 2007):
On Route 390 from NY Thruway to Rte 86 exit 7 Mount Morris is not shown. This exit has been open and operational for a minimum of 5 years. In Pennsylvania Harrisburg area Rt 22/322 connection to Rt 83S is not shown. This addition is at least 5 years old. Garmin should be ashamed of itself. This map update (that some folks have paid $70.00 retail) is a minimum of 5 years old. I own a $200-500 paperweight for my car.

I would welcome any comments. What does your map say? How out of date is your map?
Garmin and its high and mighty customer service and outrageous prices are no better then the $100 GPS special at Bed Bath & beyond. Because I know that for $100 I don’t expect much in the way of maps, for $300 and beyond I think Garmin owes its customers something more then 5 year old data.

I`m begining to have

I`m begining to have concerns that my updates aren`t gonna resolve allot of the issues I`ve run in to. Guess we`ll see.

Some are Newer..

There is a new Section of US 30 that is less than 2 yrs old that is included in my area. I dont think a couple Missing roads that You already know where they are makes your Unit a paper weight. I think Now that Navteq is Owned by Nokia there may be some things happening faster...and Google maps also uses the maps and lets you edit them, and send in errors. Navteq and Garmin can only Update as fast as they get the information. And like any Computer based system it is Always Garbage in Garbage out...Make sure you let them know of the missing roads..

Exit 7 from I-390 to Mt Morris shows in my MapSource

And all the ramps seem to be shown in the 322/83 interchange (although not being familiar with the area, I'm not 100% sure)

2008 Map Update & Mapsource - Mt. Morris 390 Exit 7

I live in MT. Morris just 3 mile from the 390 exit 7 ramp and I use the nuvi 350. My system shows the exit ramp 7 and all the exits to route 86. You might want to check your systems setup configuration. Make sure that this type of highway is not excluded in the systems routing search.

Garmin.com has an online viewer where consumers can look at the cartographical data *before* purchase. It's how one finds out whether or not "the new maps would include certain highway updates."

People with specific deal-killing criteria would be well-served to do their homework before purchase, particularly when the provider makes the information easy and free to see.

I have a nuvi 750 purchased

I have a nuvi 750 purchased mid december of 07. I also have the "Map update 2008 city navigator north america nt" update dvd. Are the factory loaded maps on my device newer than whats on the update dvd? I would hate to load the dvd and find myself going backwards...Also, on the back of the dvd case..the compatible units supported doesnt include the nuvi 750..it includes all of the nuvis up to a 680.So it seems to me the cd was made before the nuvi 7xx came out?

.

You can check which version of the maps are on your unit by going to Wrench/Settings > Map > Map Info.

For North America, v2008 is the latest version.

If you have v2008 on your unit, those are the same as the maps on the update DVD.

If you have v8 on your unit, then the update contains newer maps.

There's no way, however, at this point that you could "go backwards" with the v2008 update disk since it represents the newest. But you might not need it, either.

My guess is that your unit already has the updated maps.

shucks, anybody need a

shucks, anybody need a update disc?.lol

So Moto Mom..the cd that i have..is that the same one everyone talks about getting "free" from garmin..the update cd they always refer to?

where did or how did you get the "Mapsource: v6.13.6" info at? what do u press or navigate to to get that?

No, not necessarily

There are two different disks that people have been getting from Garmin.

One is the MapSource disk, which people get in order to manage their favorites.

The other (which you have) is the update disk that is used to update the maps on your GPS unit (and in MapSource if you already have it installed on your computer). People have been getting the update for free (typically) if they purchased their GPS unit after the new maps were released and if their unit came with the previous version of the maps.

It is important to remember that the MapSource version and the map version are two different things.

The most current version of MapSource is 6.13.6. This is the program shell. The updates are free and are released on a regular basis. All of the different types pf map (North America, Topo, Europe, etc) "live" inside MapSource.

The most current version of the City Navigator North American maps is v2008. Updates are typically not free and are released on a yearly basis in the spring/summer.

ok i looked at the link you

ok i looked at the link you sent..do i update from there or does webupdater take care of all of that?..i check webupdater weekly..always getting the sofware update to the nuvi750.

To find out...

...what version you have, with MapSource running go to the Help Menu. Click Help - About MapSource and it will tell you what version of the program you are running.

I'm showing Mapsource 6.13.5

I'm showing Mapsource 6.13.5 but when I tell it to check for updates, it says I'm current. Was the change to version 6.13.6 very recent or is something different depending on the model??

Would I have to download the complete package or is there an update only??

The update function within MapSource rarely, if ever, works properly. It's best to go directly to the link and download and install from there.

If you click on the link, it will show you that the update was released on Dec. 4, 2007. It also lists the change history. And it indicates how big the file download is.

Two different things

WebUpdater has nothing to do with MapSource. It only updates software on the GPS unit.

If you have MapSource and want to update the program, you have to download and install the update from the link.

ok i guess i dont have

ok i guess i dont have mapsource to begin with..the update said i have no installed mapsource products to begin with.so how does one go about beginning in mapsource? and thank you for bearing with me so far..i think i was easier learning to create poi's than this.lol

.

To get MapSource, you call Garmin and ask them to send you the disk.

Tell them that you want it to manage your Favorites, and in your case, tell them that you want to use it to plan routes on your computer and send them to your GPS unit.

ok thank you so much for

ok thank you so much for your help..i will do that tomorrow..
