Comment from a new Active User :-)

Just got my active user's status today, installed the Red Light and Speed camera files.

Speed isn't going to be much of a factor for me unless something changes or I go on the road, as the closest one is some 63 miles away in a part of Ft. Collins CO where I've never been. After that then next closest is in Albuquerque NM, over 300 miles away. Denver used to use vans with speed cameras, but I there was a constitutionality issue with them, so they discontinued them for the moment. It would have been hard to keep up with them anyway, as they got moved every couple of days... would have had to post typical locations in the POI file, but they wouldn't necessarily be there all the time.

The Red Light cameras should be more valuable to me. There are quite a few within 20 miles, so I'll be going out to give it a deliberate test soon. I will be keeping my eyes open to report any that aren't in the file too.

My thanks to the operators of this site for all the assistance I've gotten as a new GPS owner. The information here is absolutely invaluable.

We had speed cams in vans also for a few months some 12 years ago. It was a pretty stupid idea back then from one of our most forgettable provincial governments. They got tossed soon after and the new government scrapped them. The problem was that a) they had a van with tinted windows stopped by the side of the highway ( so much for the no stopping on the highway unless it's an emergency ) which was dangerous in itself, and b) drivers would instinctively brake hard every time they saw a van, any van, parked on the side which created a rear ending hazard. As we all know, stupidity has a way of rearing it's ugly head, and there are now calls to bring them back by the police they need a way to fund a helicopter ).

Are there speed cams in

Are there speed cams in California? I think I've only got to worry about the red light cams, unless we go on a big road trip?

I don't know of any speedcam, but saw plenty of speedtrap. Love to have a POI for it but the problem
is they are moving around all the time, hard to keep track with the locations. Anybody have any idea?

You could...

...use the most often seen speed traps I guess. If there is a stretch of road that is trapped on a regular rotation, it could be marked with coord's from each direction (if applicable), and they could just be listed as potential speed traps. idea

I'm surprised that someone hasn't done something like this already.

Even with being mobile

There are some places that small towns are making a living writing speeding tickets. We had a town on HWY 54 West of Lake of the Ozarks the road dipped down on both sides of town and the area dropped in speed to 45mph. The state was getting so many complaints the speed limit was raised to match the rest of the road. So in instances like this a speed trap or known trap area would help...With that said knowing the difference between a trap, and Law Enforcement just sitting on the side of the road running radar would be a huge challenge, and would not be affective.

Speed Cams

I don't think we have speed cams, but we do have speed signs, some permanent, some on trailers.

Plenty of red light cams to make up for it!

I agree, thanks to the POI

I agree, thanks to the POI factory for helping me understand my Garmin. The manual is worthless.
There are not many cameras in my area but I do travel from time to time so they will come in handy. I wish there was a speed trap POI but they are infrequently manned and can often be one of many locations (i.e. any interstate onramp in a x mile length). Plus there are so many known speed traps, it would take a team effort to create the file. You can lookup speedtraps in your area at http://www.speedtrap.org/.

Just keep in mind that the information collected from that site can't be posted here as a POI file.
