How often should a POI be updated?

Hi All,

Over the last few months I have come across this question numerous times and thought it deserved a good talk about and what better place than the POI-FACTORY to bring it up and dissect it.

I believe the categories (POI's) should be split into 3 parts.

High, Medium and Low priority POI's.

High level POI's to be updated at least once every 6 months.

Medium Level POI's to be updated at least once every year.

Low level POI's to be updated depending on your discression and how important you deem the POI in your unit.

Of course the debate on which POI should be deemed High, Medium and Low is a vast topic and one that only the user him/herself can decide on.

Any thoughts out there?

Trick to finding the new stuff..

One trick to keep in mind is that most companies have news releases on their websites that announce recent openings and future openings. So if you are a maintainer of a file, just go look for those. Figure out when the last time your file was updated and go back that many months worth of articles.

example

I went and found an example of what I am talking about. I went to the Lowes.com site and got into the press area and then went into the News Releases area. http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=frameSet&url=lowes.med...
I have also found this info under the Investors link at the bottom also.

That is a great way

That is a great way to keep your POI's updated. I agree that if the POI is of an importance to you for any given reason, travel or personal, then you can consider it a High level POI or even a Medium level for that matter. I guess it all depends on how often you visit that specific location and under which circumstance.

POI Files up to date

Miss POI,
I have a question on the RestAreasCombined.csv, if you go to the rest area section you will see several POI.csv with newer dates than the RestAreasCombined.csv, how do we know if the RestAreasCombined.csv has all the other rest area POIs that have been submitted recently?

That is a great question, at this point MrKenFL is the contact person if you are adding new rest areas so that he can make sure to put the alert in the proper spot on the freeway. So you would need to send an email to two members right now for this project. Once we get switched to the new system, each file that the location is in will be automatically fixed when a change is made.

Here is where we are right now with the database improvements http://www.poi-factory.com/node/8321 This is the next hurdle to get over.
