4gb SDHC

Hi I just like to ask if somebody have used an 4GB SDHC (high capacity) on garmin 350. I want to by one to sort my mp3 files.

Again this is not the ordinary SD card only.

There are tons of threads

There are tons of threads related to sdhc cards. Do a search on sdhc and you will probably find the answer.

In short, some say that it works and some say that it doesn't.

The one you tried was it a 4gb SDHC card. Did you try it on your nuvi 350?

A full 4GB card can slow things down!

Hi,
I have the Nuvi 660 and purchased a 4GB card for it. At first, I transfered some music that my kids like to listen to- since we don't have a CD player in the car.

This weekend I became ambitious and literally filled the 4GB card with 1001 songs.

Now, when I turn on the unit, it takes maybe 6-8 minutes before the unit will draw a map. I hoped that this would happen just the first time I booted the Nuvi with the filled card, but so far seems to be happening every time.

It is convenient to have a 4GB card filled with all sorts of music files, but it isn't always worth waiting the better part of 10 minutes every time I turn on the GPSr before you can see a map or listen to an MP3.

It won't show the map yet, but will lock on satellites and show that it is ready to navigate. Honestly, I hadn't tried to set a course yet to see if you at least get voice prompts despite the absence of a map.

Also, if you try to go directly to the card to listen to music before the entire card "loads" you will see zero tracks.

At first I thought that I blew the card and it needed to be reformatted, but all was OK when I checked it on the PC.

So, I just wanted to give you a heads up from this perspective. Maybe there are work-arounds when dealing with a full 4 GB card- but since I just began to experience this, I hadn't the chance to look into it further.

In the end, I may just stick to 1GB (or less?) of music and gain back a quicker (not sure how much of a savings) start-up of the GPSr.

Be well,

4gb is slower

I did some experimenting awhile back....thread here:

But I did try it on the ST c530 and it worked fine.

More gigs, more wait!

Interesting experiment, thanks!

And it would appear that cutting down to 2GB worth of files on a 4GB card will save time, but using a 2GB card to begin with, even if fully loaded would save even more time.

Argh...

What class of SDHC card did you use

SDHC has class-2, class-4 and class-6.
Do you know what calss you were using for your tests.

I know that with my Pentax K10D class-6 makes a HUGE difference.

Routing before full SD card is loaded...

I had a chance to try it out.
While taking the several minutes to draw a map, and even though it says "ready to navigate" and tells you your speed and direction of travel, it will not compute a route until the SD card has been fully loaded.

I guess that if you carry the GPSr with you, and anticipate your entry into your vehicle, you can turn it on early- relying on the battery. At least you cut down or eliminate the in-car waiting time before the GPSr can be placed into service.
