Garmin C330 POI File Memory Capacity

Does anybody know how many custom POI files I can load on a Garmin C330?

I have 20,000+ on mine. It

I have 20,000+ on mine. It depends on how much detail is in each one. Like "street" instead of "st", phone numbers like "(999) 111 - 4444", instead of 999-111-4444", etc. I usually edit down the ones I use in order to increase the number I use. Also, by not using icons, you can save a lot of memory. I leave off zip codes as well. When I encounter a really large file that I want, I split it into sections of the country, that is all states west of the Mississippi if I'm in that part of the country. By keeping separate files that way, I can get a lot more data on my unit that is useful to me. Then as I travel east, I switch files. Hope this answers your question somewhat...

I'm with Benson. I do the same as he does. I edit my POI's. Since my 330 doesn't show all the info as other units, I edit those out.
You have to think of these just like other files. The more data, the more bytes they take up. Chances are you'll never run out of room this way.

I did learn today that you can put 500 FAVORITES in the C-330.

Capacity

How do you know that you are maxed out? Did it display a message stating that you are at capacity?

As I saw someone else

As I saw someone else mention, it's not the number of POIs, it's the size of the file. The C330 and C340 have 2 MB of internal memeory allocated for POIs and it will accept as many POIs as there is room. Just look at the size of the CSV file before you load it and you will have a rough idea whether the POI file will fit or not.

Please be aware that

Please be aware that Favorites or "Waypoints" are NOT the same as POI's. Using your computer via USB cable you can transfer them to your computer using the "Map Source" software then create a POI file to put them in your Custom POI's. However, they are separate on the unit until done as above. If you delete the "Favorites", and have not transfered them to Custom POI's as above, they WILL be lost...

POI Capacity

I think my mother-in-law will be stopping by tomorrow and I can download the POI files that I have from my computer onto her Garmin C330. Since I have way more POI files than she wants or needs, what is the best way to have it only download the POI files that she wants?

.

If there are specific POI files that she doesn't need, then you can have POI Loader skip those files when you run it in Manual Mode.

Garmin C330 POI File Memory Capacity

Motorcycle Mama,

Thank you for the reply. My mother in law did stop in tonight and I tried downloading the POI files I have on my computer and, as anticipated, it exceeded the memory capacity. I then tried running the POI Loader in the manual mode, but I never saw and area to skip that I didn't want to use. Maybe I can play with it some more tomorrow.

After she left, I realized that there is a newer version of POI Loader available, so I downloaded that.

Re: Garmin C330 POI File Memory Capacity

I was able to load about 1500 kB (1.47 MB) of POI's before the POI loader told me that the unit was out of memory. I figured it out by cutting down the Northeast Schools POI (1.5 MB) until I was able to load it. I used Excel, sorted on lat/long, and clipped the POI's outside of my area.

C330

I went to my mother-in-laws again yesterday and put the 2008 City Navigator North America NT on her laptop computer and then onto her C330. I also added a number of additional POIs with the POI Loader. We only downloaded the US since she did not get an optional SD card needed for Canadian coverage. I did come up with some additional questions now, though:

-Does the C330 display custom icons with POI Files?

-Can the C330 be changes to the "ASDF" keyboard pattern?

-If I want to download her 2008 City Navigator North America NT onto my computer, do I need to have her GPS connected to my computer?

Thank You to POI Factory

I've add my c330 for quite a while now and finally thought I would give the custom POI's a try. Well, I must thank POI Factory and other users for the directions. I've loaded all the Tim Horton's in Canada including the icon (at first it had a space between "Tim Hortons" in the BMP and did not work since the .csv file was named TimHortons). The download using POI Loader literally took less than a second.

Thanks again!

Nüvi 260...

... seems to have a much larger capacity as I have almost 10mb in my POI folder on the PC, all of which is installed on the nüvi. That's 233,508 POI's. grin The biggest file is one called Populated Places over 5mb by itself.
