GPX files can have phone support

Thanks

POI files in GPX format can carry MUCH more information than CSV files. One of the many fields that you can use is the Phone field. Bluetooth-enabled GPS units will then show a small Dial icon next to the phone number and can directly dial that contact right from the GPS screen.

GPX files can have phone support

If my GPS already dials and has all the bour=etooth functions do I need to add this file to my Garmin?

GPX format

POI files in GPX format will allow you to dial the POI directly when GPSr is paired with compatible Bluetooth phone.

CSV files may contain phone #, but will not let you dial directly even when paired with a bluetooth phone.

There is a program GeePeeEx Editor at http://geepeeex.googlepages.com/downloadlinks that will convert the .csv file to .gpx format.

POI Loader will load both .csv and .gpx files on to your GPSr.

The POILoader should install

The POILoader should install both csv files as well as gpx files.

GPX files

I create GPX files first in excel and convert csv to gpx. Is this the simplest method? Also what column does the phone number goin. Do I give each column a heading?

Thanks

Geocode is Fast!

Geocode was truely quick. Just finished my first geocode and created a .gpx file. 46 Lines in less than 5 mins! I also want to add the phone numbers. How would I add this information?

Phone Numbers

Does anyone know where the phone numbers would be added in the .csv format? I've tried column 4 but when I convert to .gpx the phone numbers are there but no option to dial. Also, how are the numbers formatted? (XXX) XXX-XXXX or XXX-XXX-XXXX? I've seen both.

?

What software did you use to convert your csv file to gpx?

On a totally different topic...amongst your Pro-audio equipment, do you happen to have a Sound Level Meter? - I would love to know the actual o/p of the Nüvi 660.

SPL Meter

I do not know what the software is as I am at work presently and the program is on my home computer. If you can recommend a program that will work I would be most greatful.

Yes I have a Sound Pressure Level meter. I'll do some testing and get back to you with the output levels.

Oh ok - I was just concerned that it was GeePeeEx Editor and it wasn't working properly.
I don't think there are any other converters that attempt to populate the telephone number fields from csv input...

This documents the setup I used ... I was trying to simulate the placement of the unit in a car...

I've started another thread for this...otherwise we'd be talking about two different things at the same time wink

The program was PKSFX converter. I have purchased your GeePeeEx and that did the trick. Is there a way to take an existing .csv file and load it into GeePeeEx as a whole or must I add each waypoint individually?

If you open an existing .csv file and have the "Attempt telephone number recognition..." option set, it should put the telephone number in the proper field. You would probably want the "Col 4 is address not description" option set as well.

The (Batch) Geocoder can be used to re-format the rest of the address. Currently, it copies the phone number rather than moving it, but I'm going to change that behaviour.

If I understand you correctly, I should have GeePeeEx running and the above mentioned options set when I open a .csv file. Then the GeePeeEx program will reconize the .csv file.

Change the settings (which are saved between runs). Then just do "File | Open..." and browse to your csv file.

Adding Phone Links and other extras to Nuvi POIs

Hello All

I have noticed a number of posts about difficulties in getting the phone links working on the Garmin

I had the same problem so set out to investigate.

Listed below are my findings.

To add the phone number with a dial icon requires the use of a GPX file as Garmin have added extensions to that scheme. I have yet to find a way to do it with CSVs.

Starting out with GPXs is not for the faint hearted, get a good GPX editor.

Be aware not all GPX editors properly support the extensions. The one below does

GeePeeEx Editor (trial free)

"GeePeeEx Editor is specifically designed to produce and edit GPX files destined for Garmin's® Automotive Satnav (GPSr) systems. It is envisaged that such files will be used as input to Garmin's® POI Loader and then turned into Custom POI's (Points of Interest)."
