Dear Friends,
Where may I find a POI file for Hess service stations?

Dear Miss POI,

A very nice lady at Hess provided me with an Excel file of their service stations. I was wondering if there be a way of globally converting the addresses to coordinates.

Dear Flaco,

Thank you. I have, however, been trying to do it one by one with Google Earth in an effort to place the coordinates more accurately as well as looking to see if a Hess petrol station has a telephone number (Hess seems to keep that a secret). Moreover, I find Google Earth to be entertaining (there must be something wrong with me). So far I am up to 130 Hess petrol stations.

I am sorry that I did not respond sooner.

Request for assistance

Dear Friends,

I have finished entering the stations from the list that Hess gave me except for the state of Florida. I am still working on Florida.

Some of the addresses need to be confirmed and I have listed them towards the bottom of the "Read more" page for the Hess POI file. I would be most grateful if those of you who live in the communities where these stations are located would be so kind as to correct mistaken addresses or provide coordinates.

Sincerely, david

Thank you, Ken. However, I am still working my way alphabetically through Florida excepting Naples, where a friend has a place. By the way, on my way home from upstate New York this afternoon, I noticed that a rest area on the eastbound side of Interstate 86 (also known as NY-17) did not alert. The one a little east of it for the other direction did alert. Right after I passed the entrance I noted the mile marker, which is right by the rest area itself; that is Mile Marker 212.

I appreciate your help. As I have to return to work tomorrow morning, my entries for Florida may slow down a little. Florida is the last state I am working from the list I received from Hess; I have gone through the rest.

Dear Gary,

Florida is being very popular today and, as luck would have it, it is the last state in my attention to the list that Hess gave me; I have been through the list of the District of Columbia and the other fifteen states. I am up to working on the letter "F" from the Hess list for towns in Florida (Naples is an exception). In the list, I seem to have arrived at Fort Myers, which is the aerodrome at which I arrived when going to Naples with a friend. Most of the alphabet in Florida awaits and there seem to be quite a few Hess stations there.

Thank you for your help and, although the letter "G" awaits, I can certainly work your town out of sequence. Just give me its name and I shall jump to it.

david

P.S. When I wrote that "the letter 'G' awaits," it made me feel like a producer on Sesame Street. Of course, my version would be an imitation of Eddie Murphy doing Mister Robinson's Neighbourhood.

Dear Ken,

You are most welcome. I love the rest-stop file.

I have no idea why AOL is behaving badly. If you use the internal email here at the Factory, you can send me your email address so that I can add it to AOL's Mail Controls, which will then let you write me at my regular address at AOL instead of the unrestricted maildrop.

Dear Ken,

I have just entered those in the file and have uploaded it. Do you have telephone numbers for those two Ormond Beach locations? I found the number for that Holly Hill station.

The Hess list has another two stations I have added in the area:

1537 Ridgewood Av @ Flomich St, Holly Hill, 32117

1629 W Granada Blvd, Ormond Beach, 32174 (386-615-6955)

I could use a telephone number for the station on Ridgewood Av in Holly Hill.

Thank you for your kind participation in the Hess POI project. I am currently working on the towns that start with the letter "F". If you want me to jump ahead to any other particular town in Florida, I am happy to oblige. Just let me know and I shall tackle that venue first.

Dear Friends,

Today I changed the unrestricted address at AOL that I use as my maildrop. Some folks said that email was being rejected by AOL and I could not fathom why. Dear Gary,

I am sure there may be many coffee beans being ground with petroleum additives (see posting above from MrKenFL). Who knows how many Hess stations are now called Java Junction Coffee. However, perhaps it adds flavour. I know that my local Hess station provides a variety of flavoured coffee; perhaps coffee is just another kind of fuel.

Coffee is the drink of The Workers (when we are not imbibing tea, beer, red wine, or single-malt whisky).

After finishing the Hess list on August 21, I noted that Florida has over forty stations remaining to be confirmed -- this is more than double the number of any other state. Perhaps you still feel that "someone from that part of the country will need to get it started"? Perhaps someone from an adjacent state should resolve the unconfirmed locations in Florida?

David - tried sending this to you via POI Factory contact e-mail - e-mail rejected.

Anyway - the Hess Station at 4590 S. Ridgewood Ave.(US-1) in Port Orange, FL has been verified.

Coordinates are -80.984770,29.137902

Will be driving up to Flagler later today to try to verify that one:

Update: Drove up to Flagler Beach.
Did not see a Hess Station at
4861 East Hwy 100, Flagler Beach, FL

Also checked on Hess website and they don't list one at this address.
