What controls zooming maps?

So, here I am with a week's experience with A GPS device and thinking I am learning a lot. Then I realize that I do not have a basic task understood...

On my Nuvi 200, whether in open view or navigating a route, I notice the 2D map zooms in and zooms out at varying times without my intervention. It appears to be speed related. Is this device programmed to zoom out and in when one slows down or speeds up? Any other zooming rules that it applies ?

zooming

I will suspect that that that is a speed related feature. My C330 & C340 do that as well. I like the feature especially when you are navigation in a town that you are not familiar in.

Yes, it zooms in and out

Yes, it zooms in and out automatically depending on the speed that you are going. However, it does somewhat learn how to zoom in and out at the zoom level that you want. For instance, mine zooms in to 500ft while I am going less then ~58-60mph. Then when I go over the threshold, it zooms out to .3 miles.

To make it go in and out to the zoom level that you perfer, just set it to the level that you desire and then the next time it goes that speed, it will zoom in or out that level.

Zoooommmm

Almost the same as mine, except I think mine is at .2 at the high speed. Of course I only knew that when they finally added the scale to the 750 (and restored it to others).

They restored the scale to yours?!!!

What does it mean to have scale restored?

I have a Nuvi 250w. I also noticed that my GPS zooms in and out depending on speed. What does it mean to have scale restored? Mine only displays scale when in 2D mode and when within 500 feet I think.

Well, not exactly "restored." I don't think it was ever there on the 7xx's until this update. I saw somewhere about the same time that it had been restored on another model, so hopefully they may be getting to yours soon.

Refering to a scale indicator on the bottom of the map screen that indicates what level of zoom you are at. From what I've read here it was on most Nuvi models but disappeared with one of the firmware updates. I don't believe it was ever on the 7xx series, but appeared on a recent update, and from what I've read has "re-appeared" on some others.

Don't Expect Map Scale

There is a message at gpspassion:

http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=100799...

Where a user said they had called Garmin and Garmin advised him that they purposely took the map scale away (Thanks Garmin).

Quote ... "I called Garmin about them, and they were not aware of items 2 and 3. They were aware of the map scale being gone, and said that was a deliberate decision."

It sounds like Garmin decided we don't want a map scale, and since that seems to be the Garmin attitude lately about not including and deleting features, I don't think we can expect our map scale back.

Garmin believes their way is the only way we want to configure a GPS instead of adding a configuration option to turn on or off the map scale (based on the users/customers preference), I expect there will be no feature enhancements and only more and more options being removed from our units.

One option I was really hoping for was an option for the user to select at what speed the map scale autozooms out.

Speed limits in the majority of Canadian citys is 60 km/h or under. Highways are 80 or 90 km/h and freeways are 100 km/h.

My 660 zooms out at 94 km/h, which is fine for freeways, but when travelling on highways between citys, it would be nice to be able to set my gps to zoom at 75 km/h.

That way when in the city, I am zoomed in and when outside the city I am zoomed out.

Don't Expect Map Scale... If you bought a Nuvi.

I have a StreetPilot 2720 and on my unit in:

Settings > (2) Map Settings > (4) Auto Zoom

I have a list of about 20 options for the auto-zoom feature. Including OFF, which I sometimes prefer on longer trips. As long as I am not in 3D mode I still have map a scale. If you are annoyed with your Nuvi, look for a StreetPilot.

I agree that it is bad practice to "update" a unit into having less features. I am surprised to see Garmin do this as I have had an entirely diffrent product experience with my StreetPilot.

I suggest you, and anyone else that is annoyed with the deletion of map scale, write a letter to Garmin. Express to Garmin your displeasure with the removal of a useful map scale. If they get enough letters you will see your features come back.

Good Suggestion

Good Suggestion, already wrote them. I encourage others to write as well.

I have had other Garmin units in the past and was happy with them, but purposely taking features out of a unit for whatever reason, probably marketing reasons, is unacceptable. I am not going to buy another Garmin GPS after buying a Nuvi 660 because they decide to take out features to encourage me to buy another Garmin. I might buy another, but it won't be a Garmin.

That is like brining your brand new car into the dealership for an oil change and having them remove the back left wheel ... what you complaining about ... just upgrade to the new years models we have ... it has four wheels!
