Nuvi 760 inaccurate 300 to 500 ft

I just got my 760 and found it to be off by as much as 4 or 5 house addresses and up to 500 feet. I called Garmin and they told me that the grid might be off in my area. It if frustrating when you put an address in and drive to it and you know you go past it becasue the grid is off. Has anyone else had this problem or know a solution?

Hi,

It's unsual that your neighborhood is off by 500 feet.
Suggestion: Park in front of your house and click on the car icon. The unit will tell you the closest address. This way you can see what it thinks that the addressm is. I have traveled from Illinois to Florida and all my addresses have been found w/o problems.

I will keep my Nuvi 650

Based on the reviews, I am going to skip 7** series and keep my Nuvi 650.

Already tired

It came up 3 house addresses over from my current one.

Thanks anyhow.

This is typically a function of the map database and how the addresses are determined.

It may be helpful to know that, for the most part, the unit does not "know" exactly where every address is located.

Typically, it knows that a certain street segment contains a certain range of addresses. Then it attempts to interpolate where those addresses might occur along the street based upon the rules that it employs. For example, odd numbers on the east side and on the south side. And it attempts to "divide" the addresses along the street segment.

However, this may or may not accurately conform with how it is in reality. It is not at all unusual for addresses to be several hundred feet off. In fact, it seems that this is fairly normal. And in rural areas where the addresses are further apart and may not follow actual rules, it is likely that that they addresses may be even further off.

This is not reflective of the GPS recevier but rather a limitation of the map information.

My Nüvi 260 with the NT

My Nüvi 260 with the NT 2008 map seems to be dead on for rural northeastern Colorado. My wife's dad lives on a farm on a county road in the middle of nowhere, and it plots dead on with my Nüvi. It would be interesting to check ssiegel's neighborhood against another mapping entity. I use MS Streets and Trips 2006 on my computer at the moment for planning trips, and it matches the Nüvi dead on for everything I've checked so far.

My 660 is off at times

My 660 was off here in atlanta on my address and my sisters address. Hey given everything that these units can do to be withing 500 ft of an addy works for me. That is what eyes and a mailbox number is for anyway. I can not wait to get my 760 this week. The thing that you can do if these are addys you use a lot, add them to you locations by using the coordinates function.

Squatch

'check the same address in Google Map

If you check the same address in Google and it is off the same amount...you can tell Navteq to fix it...they use the same maps..
My Whole road has addresses off close to a quarter mile..and My road has been around since before Cars..It is the original Lincoln Highway...But somehow they also named Rt30 the Lincoln highway in My county only..and Screwed up everything...

760 destination accuracy

Has anyone heard of any Garmin plans to address this issue via map updates etc???????????? Is this issue a wait for another map update outside of Garmin control????? Just looking for the bottom line from current users before I make a call to Garmin.

My nüvi 660 and nüvi 760 can sit side by side and give identical results. I got the nüvi 760 for the additional features and improvements in the screen and interface that I find to be useful to me. Having gone back to my nüvi 660 for a recent trip made me realize how quickly I had adapted to and missed the changes that had seemed fairly subtle.

These "reviews" seem to leave out the 99.9% that the units do very well. I'm happy to get to the same block as the intended destination, but often find myself within 20 feet. Although I use and depend upon GPS daily, I still look out the windows and can read street addresses when people are kind enough to place the address of their house or business where it can be read from the street.

It's out of Garmin's control

Navteq makes the maps. Garmin gets you to where the map says the location is. All GPS units are this way. To see for yourself, search for your addresses with Google Maps or MapQuest. You will see the same error with those because they use the same map data. Navteq has an online reporting tool to report inaccuracies. That's all you can do.

Yep, as stated, it's a function of the map database. Years ago, I remember looking up an address in Street & Trips, and it was on the wrong side of the road. So, this is a long standing issue.

Don't expect Garmin to address this. Report it to Navteq, but expect it to be low on their priority list especially for residential addresses. They would have to manually verify and then correct the address. Takes time and resources. Eventually, it may happen over time, but I wouldn't expect it any time soon.
