Software to move Favorites to Custom POI?

I was fooling around on www.geocaching.com and they have a cool option to send the location(s) to a Garmin GPS directly from the web site. I wish more web sites had that option, especially Google or Mapquest. Anyway, it puts each location as a separate entry in Favorites.

I would prefer to organize them like POI's and group them in the Custom POI section instead. Any software out there that might allow some sort of copy and paste between Favorites and a Custom POI file? I am fairly adept at creating POI csv files, but I would like to avoid just manually creating the csv entries. Tedious...

Takitwithme Google Map converter

You can do it with Google, by the way. Try this web site...

http://www.takitwithme.com/

where you can basically set up points in Google Maps, input the URL of your saved map with all the points into the takitwithme.com site and it will load them directly into your Garmin GPS that is hooked up to your computer.

Alas, like the site you use, it only adds them to the Favorites list, not a Custom POI file.

However, on the flip side, since it is your My Maps under your own Google account, you now have a living "document" so to speak of your favorites that you can add to or delete from anytime and live update your GPS. Although you would have to manually add any to the Map that you had added to your favorites from the GPS itself.

Hmmm, I wonder if there is a way to get Google Maps to somehow output a CVS type file or at least something close that can be altered into a proper CVS file, directly from your saved Map. I'll poke around and see what I can figure out.

If you have mapsource you

If you have mapsource you could load them into mapsource then save them to your poi folder as a gpx file and run poiloader to put them back on your unit as custom pois

TakItWithMe does GPX file creation also!

OK just remembered something about that site. It can do two things. Either download your Google Map directly to your Garmin into the favorites. Or it can generate a GPX file instead and save it to your computer.

Take that GPX file, drop it into your Custom POI folder and run the POI Loader and, TAh DAH! your Map is loaded as a Custom POI. I just tried it.

You can now use Google Maps to find and select locations, add them to your custom map, and then generate a GPX file out of it. Google Maps is much less tedious then typing in coordinates and such into a spreadsheet.

Hope that helps.

Might be a workable option!

I have also just tried GeePeeEx Editor to load the Favorites (current.gpx), deleted the actual favorites and then saved it to the POI folder with the desired category name. Then ran POILoader to load it in as POI's. That seemed to work really well and with not too much hassle. I also liked the expanded description ability that using a GPX file gives. I thought that GeePeeEx Editor was pretty cool, with it's internal link to Google Maps and Google Earth. Allowed me to look at the map or satellite view and adjust the coordinates by dragging the icon. Seemed really easy to use. Couldn't try the export to csv option because the trial version doesn't allow that.

I don't have Mapsource. How is the ease of use in editing Favorites and POI's?. I have a Nuvi 350, so most of the rest of Mapsource would do little or nothing for me.
