Newbie Needs Help

Hi,

I have recently attempted to create a custom POI of US casinos.

I have a .csv file with all the information, including coordinates, in the .csv, however it does not seem to convert properly.

Any help or suggestions?
(I can forward the file as well)

Also, is there a limit to the number of points you can enter into a single POI file?

Are you formatting correctly?

If you follow the formatting instructions from this page: http://www.poi-factory.com/garmin-csv-file-format then you shouldn't have any problems. I'm guessing perhaps you are leaving out quotes or something similar? It might help if you share a couple lines from your file.

Also, you might want to check the list of existing POI files on the site (http://www.poi-factory.com/poifiles/alpha) to be sure you aren't duplicating work that's already been done. There are several casino files already.

Thanks For The Help

I have reviewed the current casino files.

The list that I have includes every casino currently operating, under construction, or planned for the future, worldwide.

My plan is to break it down by country at first, and then break down Canada & the US by Province/State.

I know the raw data is probably the best available, I just don't know how to create a POI! laugh out loud

I'll check out your link in hopes that I can get it to work.

Thanks!

Still Having Problems - I Think

I followed the directions within the link you forwarded me, however when I transfer the .csv file, my Nuvi 360 only shows 50 of the nearly 1500 entries in the file.

This brings me back to the second question in my original post.

"Is there a limit to the number of POI's in a single .csv file?

.

For any POI list, the unit will only show the 50 (or 52) locations nearest your current position. The rest are there and can be searched by name.

If you need to be able to see more than that in the menus, you would need to break them into smaller files.

I've never heard of a limit to the number of POIs in a single CSV file. Certainly, 1500 isn't too many as far as the unit it concerned.

No

That's a limit of how many the Nuvi will display in a single list. The Nuvi will only show you the 50 closest. If you search by name you will probably find that all of the others are actually in there.

Thanks For the Heads Up!

Thanks for the heads up on the 50 closest POI's limit.

I've spent 3 days attempting to build a POI .csv file that works, only to have you guys tell me the very first one probably worked fine!

Too funny.

Thanks Again

But now you'll never forget. : )

Another way to test your list....

You can also test your list by using the "near" function. Use Where To? > Near to specify another city. Then open your Custom POI list and it will show the 50 nearest to THAT location.

Custom Poi List

"Then open your custom POI list"...is there a separate list on my Nuvi 200 that I am missing? I downloaded one file from this site, and loaded it to my gps, but when I search for one of the POI's the hour glass just keeps turning and turning, and no results thus far. I entered in the POI as "Spam Museum" which was from the Minnesota Offbeat Tourist Attractions file.

My question is is there a separate subfolder on my gps that I can't find for "Custom" POI's?
