Firmware update for POI Garmin

I need you all to weigh in on this....

We need to lobby Garmin for a firmware upgrade (not a new series Nuvi 800) that will allow users to select which POI (custom and/or built) to be displayed on the navigation screen.

For the kind of money we pay, it would be nice to see if a particular poi is on a route. Instead of a useless splash screen displaying the name of POIs.

eg. gas station

1) gas station1 0.5mile N,
2) gas station2 1.0 mile NW... etc.

Sometimes this can be costly as the gas station displayed as closest may not be on the route (toll road).

Eg. gas station1 is close but and you have to pay a toll and do a lot of looping to get there.

While gas station2 is just 1 mile ahead.

This is a simple and deserved upgrade, as all the proximity capabilities are already programmed into the units. Only the symbol display is lacking.

I don't know, can u not just

I don't know, can u not just select gas station 1, and then check the turns to see if you want to go that way. .. It would be great to see them on the map...save allot of trouble I guess. Wonder how hard it would be to do that... Does anyone else offer that feature already?

Firmware update for POI Garmin

Yes that feature is available in many other devices. Look at Navigon (a unit which cost only $250)

In addition, over 3 years ago I interfaced the gps receiver from streets and trips to my PDA comport and with third party maps I could do the whole works.

select pois to be displayed, set alert radius.....etc.
it was really useful, but the PDA resources allocated to navigation was limited.

Maybe I don't understand

Every Garmin unit I have owned (and I have owned many over the years) allows you to search for POI's that are along your current route.

Hi Quack, 1. Let's say you

Hi Quack,

1. Let's say you are new to an area or vacationing if visuals of select POIs are available on screen, it can help a lot in the discovery process. I can testify to that when I was in Hawaii with my PDA.

2. After setting a destination from the "where to" icon, and the route is calculated.

Let say a POI is needed on the route. After going back to where to >> POI >> near... >> My current route >> OK, then search for the POI.

A splash screen appears with a list of places (eg. gas station) Some of these places on the list may take you off your designated route when they are entered as a via point.

Instead, it would be nice if the gas station icons within a set radius or the zoom area are displayed on the screen and it would be possible to just stop at the one along the highlighted route.

I looked at Navigon really

I looked at Navigon really hard and talked to their tech support and you can't use custom poi's unless you buy 3rd party software.. That made me stay with Garmin not to mention the bad reviews I read about Navigon too... Garmin isn't #1 for nothing.

PDA's are better in that respect..

Pocket PC capabilities using GPS are much more powerful than what you get on these GPSr units. That resources issue was solved years ago with the more powerful processors and cheaper memory.

My issue is with not with the idea of looking at the POI's which to me should be the norm but my issue is with the bad POI database that comes in the Garmin and you can't fix it. sad
I don't care if there are millions of POI's because the ONE that I need doesn't do me any good when the lat-lon coordinates are off by half a mile or the place of business has been closed for over two years.

I experience that on my 770.
