Audio books?

Has anyone used there GPS for listening to audio books on long trips? How much free space on a card is needed? Where do you download them from, and what do they cost? Are they abridged, or the whole shooting match of a book? Thoughts? Advice? I do get tired of listening to the same songs ad nauseum, and I've got a couple of long trips coming up.

Use iTunes for Audiobook CDs and Podcasts

Through iTunes you can get free podcasts on most any subject. Just send the mp3 file into your GPSr. The files aren't that big and aren't as affected by the small speaker of the GPSr.

Audiobook CDs can be converted by iTunes into a mp3 usable by the GPSr. Set your iTunes Preferences to Advanced>Importing>MP3 Encoder. Under Setting, select Custom. I use 48 kbps, Sample Rate>Auto, Channels>Mono. This will turn each audiobook CD into a mp3 file of around 30 MB in size.

Audiobook CDs usually have many tracks per disc. If you want to transfer them to single file per disc you can also use iTunes. When you are ready to Import CD, select all the tracks of the disc, then choose Advanced>Join CD Tracks. This will allow to create one mp3 file per disc. Then click the Import CD button.

iTunes is available for Mac and Windows computers for free at http://www.apple.com/itunes

Obtaining Audiobooks

I get audiobook CDs from my library and then convert them to mp3 files. MP3 files can be put onto any mp3 player or your GPSr.

Audiobooks come in abridged and unabridged versions. Unabridged books can be over 20 hours for some big books. Abridged version are usually 3 to 9 hours. Your choice depends on your stamina and interest in hearing the book exactly as written.
