Question: .csv and .poi

Forgive me, this maybe a dumb question... I am so new to this but looks like i have a new hobby...

What is the difference between a .csv and a .poi file? I noticed my Magellan 3225 have .poi files but many of the discussions here
are about .csv files....

For the Points of Interest,

For the Points of Interest, I think Garmins use *.csv or *.gpx files. TomToms use *.ov2 files. I guess Magellans use *.poi files.

>poi files

The garmin reads .poi files. When you load .csv files using the poi loader, it changes the .csv and .gpx files to .poi. Hope this helps a little.

Did you mean to say it changes .csv and .gpx to poi.gpi?

Yep, thanks for correcting me. I guess I need to learn more about these. But now what system reads a .poi file?

POIs in Magellan

You have to use your Magellan POI Editor to convert .csv (comma separated values easily read and edited by most spreadsheet programs)into a format your Magellan GPS can understand, .mgln files( Your Magellan POI Editor and Magellan Tools Disks that came with your GPS).
Other models and makes use various other formats. It is not that complicated, but you need some basic knowledge of how to run a spreadsheet program like MS Excel and how to edit and save files. This is particularly useful knowledge if you want to save part of a list of POIs from a .csv file because the whole file may not be of an area you plan to travel in.
Look further at other titles in this forums. PerrDom has some excellent posts on the subject. Your Hobby scope just needs to expand a little.

The new Magellan RoadMate

The new Magellan RoadMate 1200 uses a .POI format, which is binary. Being a software engineer, I've looked into it, particularly since there is no included software for editing/updating them included with the device, and there seems to be no software "in the wild" to edit them. sad

They seem to be compressed (as evidenced by text "dictionary" entries clumped in one part of the file) files, but they aren't zip formatted, nor cab formatted.

At any rate, it's Christmas, and I'll try and see if I can get anybody at Magellan to reveal some of their info after the holiday.

If anybody here knows anything specifically about MAGELLAN'S (emphasized, since this is the Magellan discussion) POI format, please let me know.

Roadmate 1200

any updates?
I too would like to edit my POI's, but you have the programming skills I lack. If you've found a way to edit these, I would LOVE to know how.

TIA,
Joe

I would love to see if anything could be added/changed in terms of POI's!

Roadmate 1200

It appears the 1200 has fallen from the radar as far as the inability to edit POI's is concerned.
I have been after Magellan since I bought mine trying to get updated maps or an editor for the POI files... I'm getting nowhere.
