Seems the only way MSN direct feeds info to your car is when the receiver is plugged in to the car battery. However most cars cut off the connection to the cigarette lighter when the key is out.
Wondering if anyone had tried to use a indoor adapter for the receiver, and if they did recommend which one and where to buy one.
TIA
Here's one I got for $12.95
Here's one I got for $12.95 for that specific purpose.

$12.95AC Adapter for Car Chargers, US outlet plug
Now I am I am looking at the Battery Adapter PRO for my long overseas flights. It will allow the GPS or my phone to be recharged while I am away from a plug AND it doubles as a flashlight.

I saved enough to get a duplex lighter socket.
Radio Shack has 'em
Here's an adapter available from RadioShack.
AC-to-DC Portable Power Supply
It may be at your local store. This one is more expensive than the others listed above.

Double Check the manual
I beleive that there is a battery in the MSN cable that will last for about 2 days or so. This is supposed to allow and store the feeds until you hook your gps up to it. This battery is not charged from the adaptor, but rather through your nuvi 680 when it is hooked up.
So - unless you are only driving every 3 days or so you should have the latest information already. I don't think the battery will last as long if you don't have coverage though.

Although the charger works fine with my 680 it doesn't do so well with the nuvi 760 or 770 and doesn't seem to be able to indicate that it is charging the battery. I believe it must be because the current capacity isn't quite enough. I ended using the one from Radio Shack that brentrn posted above that had a higher rating (and higher price) and it worked great for both.
I spoke to MSN guys up at Microsoft and they said they are aware of some of these kind of chargers that are electrically "noisy" and can interfere with the MSN receiver function in the auto adapter plug. I can attest that the one from Radio Shack is safe from this problem in my testing.

u might want to read the Radio Shack customer reviews
The comments by users on the Radio Shack site are not very positive.
under-powered and over priced appeared to be the common theme.

Here at CES I asked a Microsoft engineer on the MSN Direct team. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=280256&l=ac08d&id=8266... The receiver will continue to receive data for several days assuming the internal battery is fully charged.
Here is the kicker about charging that battery... the battery does NOT charge when it is simply plugged in an outlet like if you leave it plugged in your car while you take the GPS with you. You must have the MSN Direct receiver plugged in as well as the nuvi so apparently the nuvi has the recharging components for the nuvi as well as the MSN Direct battery.

updating info:
Hi, sorry to bother you with this, but I am still a little confused on the recharge/update. I figure that there should be 3 ways to do the full updating. Please let me know if I am correct or not. Thanks in advance.
In car:
1) Correct?: Receiver plugged into the lighter (green light on) and to the 680 base with the 680 turned off? I understand the answer is "no". This was a charge ONLY. It will update ONLY when turned "on" and still hooked up. Then it would take a few minutes. Am I correct?
Now to accomplish the same thing in the house:
In house:
2) Receiver cord (lighter end) laid out fairly straight, other end plugged to 680 base (with a recent charge to the cord by having been in use recently) and the gps mounted the base. Charging using external ac charger. Correct-->?: Nothing happens until it is turned "on" other than a gps charge. Correct-->?: Updating should occur when the gps, still hooked up, and turned "on"? It looks like it would "if the battery in the cord is charged up", (but you don't know how much charge, if any, it does have.)
3) In house:
Method 2 but using a lighter adaptor in the receiver only, no ac charger. It should work the same: No update until power on, still hooked up.
Thanks
Based on my understanding of
Based on my understanding of what I was told:
1 - yes
2 - I don't know for sure but your logic sure is solid so I would think that is correct. I will need to ask about this scenario at CES to the engineers.
3 - yes
