Is it me?

I have the following: Tom Tom Navigator, Garmin, Magellan 360 and, now, Google maps / GPS.

I loved my Magellan, which is less than 10 months old. But since the beginning, I have been contacting Magellan about these useless POIs contained in my unit. GFor example: the nearest yacht clubs and boat launches, harbor patrol, border patrol, boating and, apparently, there are only 2 gas stations in the entre county. Oh, by the way, I reside in Las Vegas. The only POI that is loaded with information is (yes, you guessed it!) HOTELS! Of course, anyone who has visited or heard of Las Vegas knows that all the hotels are on one street - and I know where Las Vegas Boulevard is!

I have been unsuccessful in contacting a member of Tech Support that even knows what I'm saying - I'm not even sure when they do, as I cannot understand a single word they are saying. I asked how I might incorporate useful POIs: grocery stores, gas stations (by name, for credit card purposes) Sam's Clubs, Wal-Mart, etc. I doubt anyone residing in Las Vegas would ever search for the nearest yacht club or harbor patrol.

Despite my telephone, e-mail and snail mail inquiries, I have received nothing. They never understand me: they insist I have 9 POIs installed - I know that. Depending on how I access my POIs, I can have as many as 18 categories. Does anyone know how to incorporate more logical POIs? Those that are actually useful? Seems when there is no category, I cannot even type in a name, like "Wal-Mart," as the form fill software cannot be bypassed and it will not allow me to type in anything that doesn't fit it.

Also, I have a friend who has a Magellan 760. The update / upgrade is horrific ($ 150). Does members on this site ever share updates or is it even possible? I know he is willing to pay anyone who can help from having to spend that much money. It is exorbitant!

I am so disappointed with the (lack of) Magellan's techinical support, and even wrote to them asking if having their technicians feign an inability to communicate with me in English to just get me off the phone or do they merely keep repeating / reading a "Bible" of nonsensical information, none of which even pertain to the topic at hand, in hopes I will become frustrated and give up. Their tactics are flawless - I have hung up on them every time so, obviously, this technique is 100% successful! It's so incredibly frustrating that, even though I am still in my warranty period, I have purchased yet another GPS system. This one utilizes Google's maps and turn-by-turn instructions.

Any ideas for either loading useful POIs, and for my friend who requires an update for his 760?

I perused your topics and responses and I am extremely impressed with your knowledge and, more importantly, members' sincerity and willingness to help. Ever consider applying with Magellan to train their tech support?

Thanx, bunches!
Nanette

If I were you, I would run for the exit with this GPS.

Hello L80XTC Don't Give up Just Get A Garmin Unit and your worries will be gone Far as Magellan I have no clues But I have talked to a lot of GPS Owners and I asked which Gps is the best and everyone said Garmin well Garmin is the Gps Company for The United States Goverment so I asume that should make them the best company if our country relies on Garmin for navigation for Pilots,Ships and Etc.

POIs

Don't give up. One thing I've learned in all the reading and testing I have done over the past month is that POI data is about 2 years out of date, even on the Garmins. Where I live, about 20 percent of the restaraunts listed on the 2008 North America maps have been out of buisiness for about 2 years. Also Magellan provides about 1.5 million POIs. Garmin and Tom Tom provide about 6 million. So Magellan may not list a lot of what other devices do.

Frankly, as much as I'd like to see more up to date POI databases, I can't imagine what it takes to maintain it. The book "The Next Exit" comes out annually and it only covers the POIs on the exits of Interstates. That in itself is a huge chore.

The solution seems to be within the GPS community itself, sites like this one, rather than entirely with vendors. You may want to look at the Magellan FAQ as there is a post that tells how to load POI files. Geocoding, that is, finding POIs and building your own files is fun too. At least for mapping junkies. Additionally, NavTeq (the map that Magellan and Garmin uses) has a place on thier web site for users to input map updates and POI information. So in other words, right or wrong, acurate POI data is up to us.

I'd post links but I'm still new here and haven't got member status yet.

POIs

When I bought my tomtom I never gave a thought to the amount or type of POIs on it. I bought it strictly for the turn by turn directions on how to get where I am going. Most times I know where it is I am going. Either to a client, hotel or restaurant. I can count on one hand how many times I was some where and thought I wonder if there is a restaurant, hotel or other place around.

For example, I went to Vegas for the first time in the spring of 07. I knew I was staying at the MGM grand. I got to the airport and told the shuttle driver MGM Grand please 15 minutes later I was there. I did not arrive and wonder if there was a hotel near by. Finding a place to eat was not hard they're everywhere.

I can understand your frustration. Some of the factory POIs in my tomtom are old, or just incorrect. I just do not use them. But that is why this site is here. I have downloaded a few POI files from here that are very useful. Like the WAWA one They are all over the place where I live and I usually buy gas there because they are usually the cheapest. So If I am in an unfamiliar area and need gas it is nice to find the nearest WAWA to me. Before that I would stop at the first gas station I came to.

Just look around the site to find the POIs that will help you.

In all the US Government aircraft I flew, they had Bendix/King GPSrs installed.

POI is definitely going to improve

That is why I think the future will be either Google or Microsoft Live Search incorporated into the GPS units.

That is how it can be done currently on the Pocket PC Phone GPS unit that I have. The data link to the Internet over my phone allows the GPS software to be linked to POI data of literally everything on the Internet. I can do a search, directions to the place and even call them all from the data out of the Search. That is how Google Maps Mobile is running on my phone now.

With the Microsoft Live Search I can even use my voice now for input instead of the touch screen. These aren't perfect solutions (that is why I have a nuvi 680 along with a Pocket PC GPS Phone) but you can easily see where the market is driving this. Location based services is where it is at. Of course this all means you need a device that is data connected to the Internet and most don't do that. MSN Direct Services is the closest thing for dedicated units. I think the boys at Garmin will need to be designing a product in the future that is wirelessly connected say with phone carrier for Google type searches.

Maybe Garmin Made All The Equipment and just put Bendix's Name on it for that Co. Just Like Sears Craftsman Tractors MTD Builds them and puts Sears Name On it sears dont build Tractors and I wound'nt think a Brake Co would build gps Well here is the answer Honeywell Built them for the aircraft and used Bendix/king :

Garmin;s technical support

Garmin;s technical support has been the best I have ever encountered. I have been sent 2 hardware items (windshield and friction mounts) free as well as MapSource and a supplemental add on for MS that allows me to find locations, create waypoints and upload same to favorites (c340). I would never stray from a Garmin product because of this level of support. Maybe I am the exception but I am impressed.

Yikes!! Here is someone who thinks the government makes the best choices and does things well.

Brief history of “Bendix”

Brief history of “Bendix” from 1980.

1982 – Bendix attempts a take over of Martin Marietta Corp.; Martin Marietta uses the “Pac-Man Defense” and attempts to take over Bendix; Bendix agrees to become part of Allied Corp. Later to become AlliedSignal.

1985 – AlliedSignal purchases King Radio and forms the Bendix/King Radio Div. in Olathe. KS. & the Bendix/King Air Transport Avionics Div in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Later that year the Bendix Corp. name disappears but many of the products retain the logo because of brand recognition.

1999 – AlliedSignal acquires/merges with Honeywell and adopts the Honeywell name.

Computers are useless. They can only give you answers. - Pablo Picasso (Bob - Garmin c530, eTrex Vista HCx)

the Disk is labeled City

the Disk is labeled City Navigator NT ( North America v8. It indicates that it is "Setup and map data DVD" On the cover:"with Mapsource for Trip & Waypoint Management detailed maps throughout the US, Canada,Puerto Rico allows turn by turn navigation on compatible Garmin units" I use it to enter an address make it a waypoint and save several related waypoints such as all my job related stops on that circuit and then upload to favorites on c340. Much like a route except must select the next stop. It really works well and I do not have to purchase a code for maps to load to Mapsource.
