NUVI 650 programing

How can I program the unit so I can take the route I want? All I can get it to do is it takes you to the freeway. I want to take other roads.

Sorry, no routing available.

Sorry, no routing available. Best you can do is "force" it by inserting a via point or make some favorites along the way and jump from one to the other. Or just drive the way you want to go and it will eventually catch up.

You can also "force" it by setting up avoidances, like avoid highways, u-turns, etc.

In the Setup you can chose to Avoid Freeways..it will reroute..You can also may chose Shortest distance not Fastest route that will also avoid freeways sometimes.

You can also change the vehicle type...

Try this:

Press "wrench" icon.
Select "Navigation".
Select "Vehicle".
Then try "Bicycle" or "Pedestrian".

These 2 choices will always avoid highways and interstates, unless there is no other possible path.

FYI: there is a difference between the vehicle icon and the vehicle type, one is cosmetic the other affects the routing.

Be careful with pedestrian

Be careful with pedestrian mode. It might try to take you down some one way roads...the wrong way. This isn't an issue when walking.

Anyone in the L.A. area or

Anyone in the L.A. area or possibly in other areas, too, ever have experiences where the device wants to always route you back to the route it thinks it is best for whatever reasons/algorythms it is? I guess it is doing what it is programmed for but I wish that there's a feature where I can quickly mark directly on the map and on the go temporarily to avoid. I think such feature will be very useful if you do know in advance certain roads will be inaccessible or have constructions.

I would guess the the avoid feature will come back to Garmin GPS. Like the saved routes and traking, it was in the earlier (aka bigger/heavier) models and those features have returned in the nüvi models. It might be the thing that makes us decide on an upgrade to future models.

here's a thought…

Wouldn't it be great if the Nuvi's could learn our preferences?

It's really strange that one time as I left the Mission Viejo Mall it routed me onto the 5 Fwy, which is only a short distance from my starting point, but tonight it decided that surface streets were the thing???

I do not have Highways checked in the Avoidance list, so I really don't get this.

Perhaps it was using the traffic density on the fwy to make the choice, but I wish there was a way to view the basis for the Nuvi's routing choices.
