Putting new map on Garmin C330

I just bought my Garmin C330 for $128 at Walmart (on Black Friday). From what I have been reading from this great site, the maps are outdated. I sent an email and within a day they told me I would be getting my updated maps in the mail within a month or so.

My question is has anyone updated the maps on their C330 yet? I am wondering if it goes on a SD card or if it updates/overites the old map on my unit? from what I have been reading people have mentioned that the maps on the CD/DVD will not fit on the C330?

Also has anyone used this unit for geocaching? This unit works great for what I thought it would do. I have already loaded a few POIs on it and I am wondering if there was any other neat things that can be done with the C330?

Putting new map on Garmin C330

When you get the CD you can chose whether to install the USA or alaska canada ETC it does not have enough memory because the 2008 version is so much larger then the version v8 you can use the sd card to install the alska canada maps and garmin also says you can install custom pois on the sd card but it has to be one or the other

Loading the new maps

Loading the new maps on your 330 is simple. You Put the DVD in a DVD drive, and Follow the Screen directions. It will add USB drivers first then tell you to connect your c330. The 330 doesn't have room to hold all of the maps on the disk. You can chose all of the USA or all of Canada. It will overwrite the old maps in your unit. Get some coffee because it will take about 45 min. Enjoy...and look here there is plenty of people that have the C330

Once again

The C330 does NOT recognize Custom POIs on an SD card - only maps !

Thanks for reply

Thanks everyone. Really quick responses.. I appreciate it. Yeah I know about the POI not working on SD cards. I think I can live with it. Got a couple 600 mile trips this month so I'll get to really test this unit. Then I can compare it after to my new maps come in.

c330

ive had my c330 for a while now ,i have used it going to daytona beach ,clearwater beach it did a very good job for me ,only one mistake there was abridge washed out in clearwater ,that wasnt updated on the map ,it was more amusing than troublesome ....the 330 is not the most sophisticated unit but it does the job....enjoy

What's going on w/Garmin lately?

There sure seems to be a lot of MIS information coming out of Garmin tech support lately.

Telling people that the 330 / 340 can read poi files off of SD cards, and can use the custom vehicles.

Several of us are having problems with screen shots, one tech sees that there is a problem because he tested it on two units in shop. Another tells me, he's never see the problem.

Anyway, maybe we could use a "Hot Topic" area to re-emphasize something like the 3xx series not capable of reading POI files from SD cards.
Just something short with a link to the full data that we already have on the site.
I can see some of the new people getting frustrated by reading here that 3xx series can't do something then being told by TechSup that it can. Just a thought.

........Garmin StreetPilot c550 / Nüvi 765...........

sorry to dig this back up

I came by the 2010.10 maps and I have the StreetPilot c330... I have tried multiple ways with MapSource and MapInstall and it just refuses to update, I always get the message "The required memory for storing maps is missing from your GPS." I get that even when choosing a small local area map, not even a full state. Using the MapInstall it says the Storage is full and 0KB space available....
When I go into the client status screen, it says my unit has a total of 1GB of space so I would think a 17.1MB map would not overload it.

My unit currently has the 2008 maps (City Navigator North America NT v8) and Software version 6.10.

Any help please? Will I need to get a SD card to be able to update or use any of the new maps or are there any other known methods of transferring the updated 2010.10 maps to my unit??

Most likely you will need to get a SD card. The 2010 map is too big for the available space on the C330 and I don't think there is a way to delete the unnecessary files to make room.

The c330 is not listed as a compatible model. You might want to give Garmin a call to be sure.

I did 2008

I needed an SD card and here is a thread here that explains how to do it. I've sold my 330 so I wouldn't know about 2010. If the lower 48 is larger than a gig then it won't work. Under that and it should work but Motorcycle Mama knows a lot more than I. Guaranteed, she has helped me out numerous times.

Got SD card

I went ahead and bought a 2GB SD card, they are cheap as it is ($6) and even if this does not work, I would have other uses for it.
Right now MapSource is sending the map set to the unit, which I am assuming is the SD card. It never gave me a fit or mention of not enough space. On the unit itself, it says "Transferring Data", so it must be working (I hope).

The reason I asked originally is because even just my part of Florida which is 14.3MB would not load, so I am assuming either the unit memory is full or write protected. I will play around with the SD card with 2010 maps this afternoon after work.

edit: well it just finished, I went into the maps area and chose to only use the 2010 maps and everything is working well at least at home. Will do some driving to a newer area of town to see if it has at least the roads in it yet.

With some preliminary checking, they do have some businesses that moved or new businesses in the updated maps... so far so good.

Thinking about getting the update for my c330

When you got the 2010 update for your C330, which product did you buy? (Onetime or lifetime... if onetime, was it a download or a DVD?) The C330 was not listed as being compatible with a download product (lifetime or onetime) but is with the DVD (onetime only).

I guess I'll plan on getting a 2GB SD card also when I get my update.
