Map Scale Missing after Upgrade

Has anyone else noticed that the map scales disappeared after doing a software upgrade?

I upgraded my nüvi 2xx from 3.40 to 3.50 and the map scale indicator is no longer displayed on the map screen. It is now only displayed on the Map Orientation Selection Screen.

On my C330

The map scale is only shown when I'm in "Track Up" or "North Up" The scale doen't show in "3 Dimensional" mode. Any possibiltiy that this is happening to you with your NUVI . Just a SWAG !

Lost Map Scale

Ditto for me, the map scale is missing on mine. It's missing on Track Up and North Up in addition to 3D view.

Let Garmin know you want the scale restored

The map scale was never included on the 3D map. The latest update removed it from the Track up and North up maps.

I am bummed to see it has been removed from the nüvi 650 also. This means it is probably intentional and not a bug in the nüvi 2xx software.

We need to bombard Garmin with negative feedback letting them know that we want the map scale restored to the map screens.

On 660 can actually get scale back, but a bit messy

I have noticed it has disappeared from View Map. If you go to Favorites then Show Map, the scale comes back. I know, you lose come capability there, but just shows scale is still available.

not much help but...

Until they get it resolved remember...or make a note.

▬custom bmp range▬ personal preferance range

To see custom bmp's I'll zoom all the way in, then back out 3x which = 300' however, at 500' custom bmp's are gone (most models).

I tried this on my nüvi 200 and it didn't work.

I just spoke to a very helpful Garmin tech.

I just spoke to a very helpful Garmin tech.

I informed her that the map scale is missing on the nüvi 2xx version 3.50 firmware. I also said the scale was present in both 3.30 and 3.40.

Oddly on units she checked, the map scale was missing on 3.50, 3.40, and 3.30. She had to go back to 2.90 to get a map scale. She is fairly certain this is a bug and would talk to the software people to get the scale restored in the next release.

She said she would also look into getting the 2xx series returned to the software download page.

Not only that but I just

Not only that but I just received my nuvi 680 and discovered thay had removed the address information when travelling. Now, you don't get a specific address or what hundred block you are in, continuously, when moving. It was very helpful to know exactly what hundred block or exact address as you are trying to locate an address. I called Garmin and they told me that they removed that feature. Bummer!

For the life of me, I just

For the life of me, I just cannot understand why Garmin removes features with firmware updates. It's almost like they're cheating us because we PAID for all that stuff. Some of those "lost" features have really grown on some users and they actually use them. Although I didn't lose my map scale, the scale "removal" was NOT listed in what the firmware updates thereby not so much as providing even a warning to Garmin users. Bad on Garmin! >:-(

I think they are so bent on increasing refresh rates

I think they are so bent on increasing refresh rates they are removing stuff from the map screen that, though useful, takes processor cycles.

I agree that if they remove something in a firmware release, that should be listed after the bug fixes and new features as a "removed feature".

Can we send this thread to Garmin?

I wouldn't think removing

I wouldn't think removing the map scale would cause anything to speed up. Mine zooms in and out just fine. As for sending this thread to Garmin, I just emailed them with this link. wink

Ask and ye shall receive. :)

Here's the email I just fired off to Garmin.

Why does Garmin remove features that were already PAID for with new firmware updates? Reference the following link complaining about the loss of the map scale in the Nüvi 6xx line-up after performing the latest 4.2 firmware update. The real pisser is Garmin doesn't even provide a warning that features will be removed when listing the things that are fixed with the new firmware...

Also, I was told there were no plans for Garmin to offer a QWERTY keyboard layout for the Nüvi line. Why is this because it's so simply done? I have a Street Pilot 2720 and the QWERTY option was provided LONG after the Nüvis came out. Why update a much older model and not provide the same for the insanely popular Nüvis? I know you can do it, so why not?

a Garmin map without a scale is rather useless

I've exchanged a few emails with Garmin customer service about this. I'm convinced that the customer service guy that I got didn't really know the nuvi line and what the map scale bar is all about. After the third email on the subject I got the "have a nice day" email and he said the email would be passed on to others in the company.

Garmin's reputation went down more than a few notches with me on pulling the map scale on the nuvis. What good is customer service that just says "thanks for sending us feedback"?

The last email from customer service says "please watch the link below for new units." The link I was given is:
http://www8.garmin.com/whatsNew/

Nothing like customer service telling you that if you don't like the changes Garmin is making to your units through software updates, go buy another Garmin.

I called Garmin again

I called Garmin again to ask for the nüvi 2xx to be restored to the Updates and Downloads page so we can once again do manual updates.

I also requested that Garmin restore the map scale to the 2D map screens. The tech wasn't aware of either issue but said he would pass on my requests.

QWERTY

Just so you are aware, the nuvi 7xx line has a QWERTY layout. It was one of the three main reasons I purchased it. If what other say is correct about Garmin only putting features into new models, then the older ones may not get it because the 7xx line has it.

The QUERTY layout should be

The QUERTY layout should be a standard option. As another member mentioned, they added it to a much older Street Pilot long after the Nuvis came out. They already have the bulk of the code written so it would be a simple tweak to "Nuvi-ize" it.

I have my nuvi 350 updated

I have my nuvi 350 updated by I still have the scale in the track up and track north. I don't have it on the 3D since I bought it.

software version 5.1
gps sw version 3.00
audio version 1.8

QWERTY would be nice

I agree, it would be nice to have a QWERTY option. I have to hunt and peck with the current layout on the 660. With more people being used to using keyboards, this would seem to be a natural thing to do.

It doesn't make too much sense to display the scale in a 3D view!
The scale is showing a 2D distance and should be used in a 2D view/representation/map (track up & track north), otherwise is creating quite a confusion...

Map scale doesn't make sense in 3D mode

gdlcjr wrote:

The map scale wouldn't make sense in 3D mode, because what's on the lower part of the screen is zoomed in more than the top of the screen.

Potential Good News for nüvi 2xx

I called Garmin again concerning the loss of our 2D map scale. The tech said he would check on it and eMail me with info. I got the following this morning:

Glenn,

I have had a response back from my supervisor.
The engineers are working on an update to correct the map scale issue.
They will have another software update coming out soon.

Anyone Else Contacting Garmin about this?

Garmin has still not restored the 2xx to the updates and downloads page!!!!!

It's been missing for over 4 months now!!!!

I have contacted customer and tech support a half dozen times but they don't seem interested in resolving this issue. How are people who can't install WebUpdater supposed to update their units?

Is there a way to get the manual update files for the 2xx? I'd like to get 3.4 and 3.5. How else can we restore a previous version if the new version has problems?

Is version 2.9 the last stable version (no missing POIs) before they removed the map scale?

I'm fairly sure that the map scale doesn't show in the 3D mode on any model. It wouldn't make sense to have a map scale in this mode because the scale would be different at the bottom of the screen than the top of the screen.

I believe the OP is referring to the 2D modes on that model.

Thanks. I listed the wrong version numbers.

Thanks. I listed the wrong version numbers. The two that are not available from Garmin are 3.5 and 3.6. They were never available for download. You could only get them via WebUpdater, so they are not at that link either. Is it possible to get or create the manual update file from the data that WebUpdater downloads?
