Measured distance error

I use a Garmin eTrex Legend when I walk my dog and also for sailing at a nearby lake. I have found an error a couple of times under the following conditions. When I go to the lake I change the units to nautical miles and set a waypoint for downwind navigation. Then when I come home (about 15 miles from the lake) I reset the unit to statute miles and reset the time and distance to zero. When I walk the dog I go on a route that is 2.8 miles at a speed of 4-4.5 MPH. The unit reads 4.1 miles at a speed of 6.6 MPH. The time is about right so I know the unit was reset to zero. It also appears to retain the waypoint for this one time. When I then reset the unit it reads correctly on the next walk and continues to do so until I use it again at the lake. Any idea what is going on here and has anyone else seen a similar problem?

Odd Observation But No Help

The odd thing is that 2.8 and 4.1 don't correlate to each other when comparing statute miles to nautical miles so it's not like it's sticking in nautical mode. I've switched my Garmin 296 back and forth between aircraft (knots) and vehicle mode a number of times and haven't seen the problem you describe. But, then again, I haven't been looking for it.

Of course, you could always reset it twice before taking Phideaux for his constitutional.
