Slow redraw, POI lookup

Just updated my nuvi 680 with a bunch more POIs and added in speed/location alerts.

Since I did that, it's VERY slow. Slow to look up a POI, slow to redraw. Not sure if I have too much stuff in there or if there's a problem with the unit.

So... going to try and load less stuff and see if it improves. There were something like 100k+ POIs loaded.

Thoughts? Comments?

How much room do you have on

How much room do you have on the Garmin drive? I know with a regular windows drive, if it gets too full, it slows it down tremendously

I think the final word is

I think the final word is not to have too many proximity alerts. I turned off some of those, and it's working fine.

That is good to know, didn't

That is good to know, didn't know that but it makes sense! It is probably trying to do too much stuff.

I think there's more to it than that...

I've had in excess of a MILLION Poi's loaded on both my Nüvi 310 and Streetpilot C510. Both reacted the same way - a little more sluggish than normal, but perfectly usable. (The main problem with that number of POI's is finding the one you're looking for! - but it was only an experiment anyway).

But - I have also had the same symptoms you report, with far fewer loaded. I don't know what actually cured it - re-running POILoader? ... re-organising the directory tree they were built from? .. Something, but I'm not quite sure what!

I had a bunch of POIs which

I had a bunch of POIs which I entered manually via POI loader to have promixity alerts. These ranged from less than a mile (5280 ft) to 5 miles out.

I don't know the algorithms with the Garmin, but it was drawing very slow (like over 10 minutes... the GPS would tell me where I was, but with a blank map with 'drawing' sitting there). Also, if I went into the Custom POIs and looked at the subdirectories, it'd do it's spin search thing for minutes (not seconds).

Once I reloaded without the proximity stuff, everything worked fine. Whether I had a bad POI load or it was proximity is not clear, but things work just fine now.

C-530 Custom POI's on SD Card...

Hi, I see that you have over a million POI's on your GPS units. I have the c530 and now have passed over 500,000 POI's which I have installed on a Sandisk 2G SD card. I also for the first time created sub folders. I now notice that looking up certain custom POI's now is slower then it was. I was wondering is it because of the amount of POI's or maybe because of the sub folders. I just wanted someone elses input about this because I don't want the GPS itself to slow down because of this. Thanks!

Slowing Down

I've been in the computer business now for over 40 years. It has long been noted that using memory vs other devices, the memory is much faster. That is why I have deleted all vehicles that I don't use, all languages I don't use, and the manuals from the GPS unit. I have a little over 200,000 POI's loaded along with all the red light alerts and my 680 runs very fast. I only use my SD card for music and pictures.

That Makes Sense but One other question...

Deleting all the files that you do not need on the GPS to make more room makes sense and is something I basically known all along. I can live with the Poi's loading slightly slower but suppose I choose a route from my custom POI's and then hit GO. Now it calculates the route. At this point I am figuring the Unit itself has all the info it needs to get you to your destination. So it would make sense that the GPS unit will not be slowed down because there are allot of POI's on the SD card. Does this make sense?
