Loss of Signal

Lately I've noticed that my 650 recalculates on my way to work while I'm on the expressway. I decided to set it to the signal strength screen one morning to see what it showed since it happens in the same spot. My signal went from 18' to 300' and then it recalculated. In a couple secs it was back under 20'. I had a co-worker check his Magellan as he came into work. His signal strength dropped to zero. This area is about 2 mi north of downtown Dallas so there isn't much in terms of obstructions. Any thoughts?

Re: Loss of Signal

I'd suspect interference, if it always happens on the same spot. Perhaps you are crossing an mw link? Underground wires?

I like the sun flares. lol I forgot to mention it is 5:30am, long before dawn and of course every day.

.

But of course that wouldn't matter if it was solar flares.

Actually, the Sun is rather tranquil lately

So which one does what? In other words, which one(s) would affect GPSrs

Geomagnetic Storms
Solar Radiation Storms
Radio Blackouts

All three?

Loss of signal

I have experienced a similar problem on U.S. 40 just west of Indianapolis. I always assumed it was interference from Indianapolis International Airport.

Thank you Keith

Thank you Keith

not solar flares....this time

I don't think it's related to solar flares or sun spots...although, that is usually first on my list. The chaos would not be isolated to one constant location.

I'm guessing you are on the N Central Expressway. (75) Looking at google earth, and estimating approximately 2 miles from downtown Dallas, albeit difficult to ascertain your starting point, or exact definition of downtown. It may be possible that the particular spot in question is directly lined up with the runways from Love Field. Interference might be the culprit, especially if it's in the same spot every time. It would be interesting if you could get a good lat and lon reading of the location. Does it happen in both directions of travel? Different times of the day?

Tell me that it happens near Lemmon Av.

Then again, maybe it's Xenu messing with us.

Solar Flares

Hi,

If it was caused by solar flares the whole Sun facing side of the Earth would feel this effect.

When this happens do you pass by any big antennas in the vicinity?

Near the 36 / 40 split??

Better yet...

Can you get good lat/long readings before & after the error? I'll assume that if the GPSr is having location trouble your readings in the "black-hole" may be a bit off and therefore unreliable.
