POI Files on SD Card (copy to GPS)

I want to share an experience I had this week that GPS users (especially Novices) may not be aware of.

I own a Streetpilot C530 and an 2GB SD card. If you load your custom POIs on your SD card and leave them there (i.e., you do not copy them to your GPS unit when asked the question when you power on the unit), all your custom POIs will be replaced every time you run POI Loader and will be accessible when you click on the EXTRAS icon.

However, if you move the customs POIs from your SD Card to the GPS unit memory once, you have to continue doing it everytime you load new custom POIs on your SD card otherwise you will not access the updated POIs you have loaded on your card.

On my C530, there is not much memory left on my GPS unit after loading the 48 States 2008 maps and I have to keep my custom POIs on my SD card. Unfortunately, I once answered YES by mistake to the question "do you want to transfer data from your SD Card to the GPS unit". If you make the same mistake, you have to connect your GPS unit to your computer and delete the POI directory from the GPS unit. This will ensure that your custom POIs are read from your SD card afterward.

I hope I was not too confusing.

Cheers

Jean

They won't be replaced if

They won't be replaced if you load them separately each time.

I'm using the C330 with the new 2008 NT map. After loading all 48 states (incl. Puerto Rico, Hawaii), I still have my Custom Poi's installed and loaded from to the main drive. I only use my SD Card to check out Alaska and Canada when needed.

Space left on Unit

I checked my Garmin unit: I still have 56 megabytes left. Then I noticed that my Custom POIs take very little room (I currently have only 4 MegaB). I will therefore remove my custom POIs from the SD card and keep them all on my GPS unit.

At first glance, access seems to be a little faster than when I leave them on the SD card. But that could be in my mind only!!!

Mind over matter

I would have said the opposite, that access is a bit faster on the unit vs the sd card

I believe that the 330 has more space on it then the 5xx. Could be wrong though.

Space on C530

The C530 has exactly 1 gigabyte of storage which is just enough for the map for the 48 states, Puorto Rico and Hawaii. My maps for Canada and Alaska had to be installed on my SD Card.

The 1 GB storage is a limitation of the C530 that I was not aware of when I purchased the unit. In fact, Garmin does not say anything about storage available for any unit on their web site!!!

If you read carefully what I said, I agree with you: access seem to be faster when custom POIs are on the unit than when they are on the SD card

Very good! I was testing

Very good! I was testing you! You passed...LOL.

Sorry, I surely did misread it.

Thanks

No worries, Asianfire

You have been so helpful to me in previous posts - I will forgive you (this time!!)

.

On some units, you can get rid of the prompt to load the POIs to the unit.

If you select "Yes" and then select "Skip this file" (I think), then you won't be prompted the next time.

Garmin should mention storage space in the future. They forget about the cool geeks out there that like to customize there units. smile Had I known better of the storage size I might have gone for a better unit. Using the C330 for five months now I’m am hooked on this thing lol.

Memory on Garmin units

I went to the automotive products pages starting at (https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134) and then compared your model to my model (Nuvi 360). You are correct that neither on the specific page for our models nor on the comparison pages does it state the exact memory.

But using the compare function is otherwise really good to compare other features and aspects of the various current Garmin products.

FYI, the Nuvi 360 (and probably others) has 1.4 GB (1.5+ trillian bytes) before loading POIs and in the case of Nuvis, MP3 and JPG files among others.
