Trying to make a local poi file

I got some of this thing figured out, but i am doing it the hard way, I got a poi file, opened it up in excell and modified it, along with the corordence with goggle earth, but am doing all this long hand, is there a easier way to do this, it works ok when i plug in the s/d card, i have read in the forums that you can do something like what i am looking for by exporting the info you need thru google earth, is this not correct and if it is how the sam heel do you do it, this i driving me to a migrane. any helllllllllppppppp would be nice.

thanks.

saving of the .klm file from google

when i get to the save as and click the name, all goes good up to the point of saving it as a "garmin seperated .cvs file" the file goes away and it says "extension .klm file does not match selected file types" how do i get around this. any suggestions.

My Test File

This is what I just tried.

1. In Google Earth, I saved a test file as .kml and not the default .kmz extension.
2. In PoiEdit, I can open the test file I created with the .kml extension and I’m able to save it with the same name selecting “Garmin Comma Separated (*.csv).

Can you retry your steps?

I'm open to suggestions people wink thank you.

I'm with you bandaid. It

I'm with you bandaid. It really shouldn't take that many steps to get POI's into your Garmin. Why doesn't Garmin allow you to import them to a MyGarmin?

dang thing

I am not having any luck with this thing, i have tried and tried it all, moving the file, saving to a different folder, even saving it to my s/d card and keep getting the same error, tried the .cvs file as well as the .gpx just trying it but always the same thing, i just got the poi editor for 2007 from the website. wonder if the program has a error in it, what version do you have bandaid

I am using PoiEdit 2007

I am using PoiEdit 2007 V5.1.0 build 210.

I don't know why your getting that error.

You know could open notepad and use the following as an example to create a poi file.
Example:
-74.1927,40.58946,Test,"Test 111-111-1111"
what your seeing is,
Longitude, Latitude, Name, Description
this can work in notepad just save the file as for example test.csv

For multiple lines create the following, example:
-74.1927,40.58946,Test,"Test 111-111-1111"
-74.1927,40.58946,Test,"Test 111-111-1111"
-74.1927,40.58946,Test,"Test 111-111-1111"

Let me know if this will work for you.

It really isn't difficult to import these files especially when using Poi Loader. Our friend is just having problems with PoiEdit and I can’t figure out why. smile

ok

okay.
but i still don't see why there shouln't be an online server for all this.

.

If you click on the "My Locations" link at the top of each page on this site right under your name, you can do that.

This sucker isnt going to whoop me

I finally figured it out bandaid, took me a while to do it tho, thats why i hadnt got back to you, however, after saving it with google earth as the .klm file and then going to poi edit, and when you do the save as i was using the same file name that dropped to the name of the file and changing the .klm to .cvs and thats when the error showed up, however if you change that name manually and not using the one that drops to the file name and then changing it to .cvs and it works....... the trick of it is to manually change that file name,i guess poi edit reconizes that that is a .klm file and wont change it, is this how you change the name of the file or not. thats the only way i can get it to work.
