I just purchased a new 350 for the wife last week. It has the v7 maps. I know I can call Garmin and get a free update to the v8 maps.
I own a 360 with v7 maps. Can I use the same updates for both units?
Short answer is no. When you do an update, it pairs the serial number of the garmin unit with the serial number of the update and sends it to Garmin, that is why you need an internet connection.
However, I wonder if you can call garmin and tell them that you just got the unit and instead of waiting for the free update cd, they could issue you another serial number for the update.
I called Garmin to get additional unlock codes, but this was a no go. You must go through their process to order the updates.
I have 5 new units - it took a long time (3 months total) to get the updates. Garmin would only ship a maximum of two at a time. It took even longer to get the order of 2 for older units that I paid $$$$$ for (go figure!).
painful, but very understandable from their point of view.. what creative uses do you have for 5 units!?
My brother, sister, adult children and wife depend on me for techno support. Now the extended family of distant relatives are sending me their units for updating.
I am beginning to feel like a depot repair shop, with all the gps units, macintoshes, and pc's being delivered daily. ...hmmmmm...maybe I should start charging them.
Time is money!
I'm sure they each have their own distinct set of "skills".
They must have something that's worth an equivalent trade. Or, maybe that next update...just isn't that important..lol
Sounds like you're having fun anyway!
