Combining POI lists into one U.S. list

Can anyone tell me how to combine all individual POI lists into one U.S. list for example...I want to combine all the Wind Farm lists into one Wind Farm POI so that it will be under one listing in my GPS. It is probably simple but so am I when it comes to computers. If someone could just spell out exactly how to do it I would really appreciate it.

Append one after another

Those POIs are all CSV files, so you can combine the content of each file using a notepad and save it to a file.

Create a folder on your PC,label it as you desire and put all your POI in it.
And use the Garmin loader, chose your new folder you created, and loader will do the rest with your GPS plugged into the PC (GPS on).

Not quite

That will create a category for each POI file.

What would be cool is..

I have been thinking of having a great program that would suck in all your POI (*.CSV) file into 1 big database or something, Then using the program to extract your choices when needed (maybe in catogory or place or something like that)

I think this would be very usaeful.. anyone else Think so?

I posted a detailed how to along these lines.

One thing I do to combine

One thing I do to combine POI files, which maybe not all of you have the capability to do.

I copy the files to a linux box and cat them together:

% cat poi1.csv poi2.csv poi3.csv > master.csv

Actually I tested this from dos as well.
Open up a command prompt and do this:
C:\YADDA> type file1 file2 > file3

duplicate entries?

If I was to combine two files, both radio station listings, for instance, and ended up with lotsa duplicate entries, wouldn't the POI loader object?

Duplicates

Just use POI Verifier to find the 'possible' duplicates for you. Be careful as there are some identical coordinates which aren't duplicates ... i.e. different stations on the same tower.

Single folders.

I just figured this problem out my self after reading some of the answers back on this problem.First of all I have a c340 garmin streetpilot and this is what worked for me.
1.I went to my documents and created a folder I named it POI then clicked on it and then made a subfolder called National Parks and another folder called Cracker Barrel. It will not work just using one sub folder I found this out after spending hours just trying to do one sub folder.2.I went to the Poi sight and downloaded the national parks into my sub folder for national parks then I downloaded the cracker barrel file into the cracker barrel sub folder.3.I then clicked on the Garmin POI loader and then using browse I uploaded from the Poi folder(make sure to use this folder not subfolders) after it showed finish when you go to Custom Poi's on your gps you will see two folders or what ever number you made.I keep the files on my computer and when I see a new file I just add another sub folder and do the same process over.

Folders for POI's

I think this will help you understand how to organize your POI's Put them on the PC Or on the SD card in your unit Organized the way you want then connect your usb cable Start POI Loader Select the Main Folder and when you look at the etras link on your unit it will have all the files you can select from. I hope I said this right. Bill

I recieved this info from Motorcycle Mama ...
You can create subfolders under a main folder and point POI Loader to the main folder.
For example, it might look like this.
> My POI (Main folder)
>> IHOP (subfolder)
... IHOP.csv
... IHOP.bmp
>> National Parks (subfolder)
... National Parks.gpx
... National Monuments.gpx
... National Recreation areas.gpx
... National Parks.bmp
... National Monuments.bmp
>> Starbucks (subfolder)
...Starbucks.csv
etc.
In this example, IHOP, National Parks, and Starbucks show up as categories and then under National Parks, the subcategories of National Parks, National Monuments, and National Recreation Areas show up.
