Nuvi 370--As the crow flies?

I've had my Nuvi two weeks and have been loading locations in "favorites". I noticed that the distance stated is much shorter than when I ask for a route. ie: 1539 miles vs a actual route of 1976 miles. I know the 1976 is closer to real because I've driven it X times before.
Any thoughts on why the difference?
It seems to indictate>>
as the crow flies until you say "Go", then it calculates the actual route. That's how my C530 works anyway

My C530 also seems to estimate diatances "as the crow flies" untill you ask it to calculate a specific route.
