late turn warnings?

Hi everyone,

I'm a new Nuvi 350 owner who started out with a Mio C310x. The Mio for the most part did it's job getting me around the Massachusetts area, but the maps were fairly old.

I've read all the great reviews on the Nuvi 350 and decided to pick one up during the Ritz camera $299 sale. There are some things that I noticed that the Mio does better than the Nuvi.

The Mio seems to be more "vocal" during the trip. For example, the Mio gives warning at quarter mile before the turn and 300 yards before the turn which is plenty of room to look for the next turn. From my brief experience with the Nuvi it seems to give warning at 0.2 miles, or 0.1 miles, and the last warning @ 100-200 ft. I find myself right on top of the turn while it's announcing the turn. This can be a huge problem if you need to get into a left/right only lane. I haven't seen any settings to adjust the frequency of the warnings. Has anybody else had this problem?

The other thing that I have noticed is that it seems to be less detailed on it's routes. For example it may tell you to continue for 4.2 miles. For a newbie this might mean that you drive straight for 4.2 miles, but I've found that the Nuvi doesn't take into the account that "continuing" 4.2 miles might involve guessing whether you bear left or right at a fork in the road. It would be nice if during the 4.2 miles if it could tell you to stay right, bear right when necessary.

I'm hoping to get some opinions or tips from the veteran Nuvi users so I can figure out if it's me or a problem that's shared by all Nuvi 350 users.

Thanks,
Ben

.

The distance at which you are notified of a turn is dependent upon the speed you are traveling. Are you using the 3D mode? It has been reported that this is more a problem in 3D mode. Try one of the 2D modes and see if you see a difference.

Your second problem relates to how the map data exists. Because roads exists in segments, often the maps picks up various points as change points whether or not there is actually a turn there.

And although most of the time it will indicate that you need to bear right or left at a turn, sometimes it doesn't pick it up because the map data doesn't indicate that there is a change in the road. It all depends upon how the data is inputted.

There's not really anything you can do about it except to take a look at the map screen as you get closer to a fork.

My c330

was doing the same thing in the 3D mode. I changed it to one of the 2D and now I usually get plenty of time before turns.

Not doing anything worth a darn.

Thanks for the tip!

Nothing like going down the road and trying to make a last minute turn with a truck! Doesn't work too well.

But officer, I know how to drive. It's just my Garmin doesn't know how to navigate!

Thanks!!

Thanks for the tip. I searched through the site for 2D view and it seems like most people prefer the 2D "track up" view. I'm stuck at work and I don't have the Nuvi to try it out.

I'll let you know.

I have also experienced this

I have also experienced this problem.... very annoying if you ask me

not on 2720

I know we are talking about a different device, but my 2720 from the same manufacturer, Garmin, doesn't have this issue. I use 3D Track Up and I get 2 turn notices - and they are both timed perfectly all the time.
